Chapter 1

"He will make it Anfiloc, though I do not know how. It is a miracle he
was not dead when you found him. The Stracrowned must be watching
over him." Anfiloc snarled as he pushed past the two old men and
entered his nephews now curtained room. He looked with great
concern on his terribly scarred nephew, uttering silent prayer to his own
deity, which would be blasphemy to the men and women of this village.
At that moment, his nephew awoke and gazed upon his uncle, whom he
held most dear.

"I did it uncle, I killed the great bear." Aelisoc said, with no weakness in
his voice.
"I know boy, I know, but what of the wolf, what was that? Where did it
come from?"
"It is my father, Maelionoc, the taint of magic caused madness, and he
attacked me. I entered his study to show him my trophy, the head of the
great bear. He gazed upon me with an unnatural hate uncle, his eyes
were like that of a beast. He screamed at me and quickly transformed
into that massive wolf, before I knew what was happening, he was upon
me. His first bite was my face, I was stunned, my own father was trying
to kill me. I quickly recovered from the pain, as you taught me to, and
with a quick move I drove my dagger into his neck. He snarled and
howled in pain as I kicked him off of me, and that gave me enough time
to draw my sword, the one you gave me after I killed that owlbear with
the trap. We circled each other and he attacked again, but this time I
dove and rolled forward, coming up underneath him and driving up. I
held my blade straight up as I stood, lifting him, he was heavy, and
throwing him across the room, smashing one of his tables and scattering
books and glass all over the place. That was when he scored the rips
across my chest, he raked me with his back legs as I stood. He
struggled to all fours, even with the two blades stuck into him. I
scrambled back across the room, to retrieve my spear, which still
dripped with the blood of the great bear. He bounded twice and was
nearly upon me as I turned and drove my spear home. It was well
placed, as I was taught to do uncle. I drove it into his mouth and through
his brain, I screamed at him as I charged forward, going all the way
across the cavern and knocking his huge wooden work bench over.
That is where I left him uncle, I left my own father, consumed by
madness to die."

"That is well boy, you have done well, you will be called Venator, that is
hunter, in the old tongue. When you are rested, you will come to live
with me for good, and when you are ready, you will go to the Academy,
and you will be a great warrior."
