Chapter 2

An unusual sound could be heard coming out of the back of StrongHammer's
forge. A light whistling could be heard carrying through the rhythm of the
bellows and steady beat of the pinging hammers. Gamberdine StrongHammer
strained to control herself, to keep from hitting Kay upside the head. She
had to remind herself taking in the orphan was making even for a favor she
owed Jolinar. She also could not deny the tireless abandon this young human
had for apprenticing the forge.

At the age of seven though, Gamberdine began to notice a difference. The
night of his sixth birthday, the boy had an extremely restless night, and
each night grew more and more uneasy. Sometime in his sixth year, Gamberdine
had decided Kay could not longer apprentice there, as his nights were
beginning to ware on her sleep, and affecting safety and effectiveness of the
forge. She would see the boy through to his seventh birthday, and then return
him to the orphanage. On the eve of his seventh birthday, as if a great
burden had been lifted, Kay slept serenely through the night.

Still Gamberdine StrongHammer was resolute in her decision and ready to march
him back to the Avenue of Faith. Then the sun parted, and the surly dwarf was
the first to witness the new visage was upon the boy. Never before did his
fiery golden orbs. After consulting with Jolinar, it was determined the best
course of action was for Kay to remain with Strong Hammer for the mean time.
Jolinar's advice was that something within the forge awoken a great potency
that should not be tampered with.
