Chapter 4

I am sixty-three years old. I'm only barely feeling my age, which lends me
hope that I have yet a long time ahead. It would be past prime for a human,
but in all these years people never ceased to remind me: I am not human.

But what have I done in these years?

A lot of the time has been spent securing my well-being, but also making
friends and contacts, and giving counsel in adventuring tricks, commerce,
even magic. In fact, through certain connections, I'm a proud member of the
Tower of High Sorcery, even though I cast maybe one spell in my whole life
(the spell being purge disease with an amulet).

Renouncing any desire to affiliate with Cabals, I did meddle in their wars,
and I am more aware of politics than I previously cared to be. I applied my
fighting strength sparingly, focusing on helping people instead of helping
causes. Reasons for that? Different good causes can come into conflict, and
some good causes will have evil people defending them.

I still saw plenty of bloodshed, and that is alright, I trained for that.

I regret I could do so little to save Wriennen from griefs and pains of
her Acolyte duty. It is a selfish thought I allowed myself: she could have
been happier elsewhere. With me. Does safer mean happier? Was I even capable
of providing that safety? I was reduced to trying to teach her to fight...
It pains me so much to even think of it now.

But I must let that pass and continue.
