Chapter 4

Taking wooden sticks of equal length, each made from the wood of a different type of tree, he tossed
the rods to the ground and bent down to examine them. Each type of wood was symbolic of something
and how they fell in relation to each other could be analyzed to predict the answer to a question. As the
chief looked over the rods he cast for his son he felt an intense sinking feeling at what he saw. He saw
death and much of it.

The rod representing death had fallen crosswise at an angle over all of the other rods representing other
aspects of his future and ended with the western pointing end touching the rod symbolizing magic. Not
only was death everywhere in his sons future but magic would be the cause of his death.

Looking up at his son sadly, he pronounced the divination and his judgment. In order to further protect
the tribe from this future full of death his son was to be exiled.
