I'm guessing it crumbled because either I repaired it at Grime or because I took it off for too long, or because they just crumble after a set amount of time. Could someone clarify this for me?

It's been this way as long as I can remember (20+ years). Think of it to some degree being like most cabal powers, that have to be renewed to continue. ICly, it makes sense both that whatever you're using from the corpse rots away, and that you're not dragging around this lame trophy from a mage you killed 30 years ago.

And it lost its stats.

Maybe it got changed but if not just a heads up not to do that.

Trophies do not last forever. Less than 100 hours (not RL-hours, but game hours)
