#50271, "Got another question for ya Daevryn, this time about ranger explorers"

Since I kinda got screwed on bedouin animist and how ancestral spirit and other spells work in different terrains....

How about an idea of what works for explorers and their respective terrain choice in non-preferred - like pursuit working for explorer marshdwellers/plainsrunners outside of swamps/plains. So what about...

-Whirling Simoon?
-Boreal Wind?
-Sure footing? (Think this one does work)
-Stormcalling or Netcasting?
-Scourge of Mosquitoes?

Think that's all of them...

I don't know the answers to any of these off the top of my head.

Really wish we had other people who had code access who could answer these.

Despite the passive aggressiveness, i'll be nice and help you guys out:

Whirling requires desert, period, Stormcalling requires ocean, period.

The rest of these get some kind of bonus for home terrain/passing wanderlust check.

My passive aggressiveness is just a general frustration that it's not seen that this would take 100+ hours to figure out in-game and is easily look at in code. It'd be better if the helpfiles were more explicit.

So you mean you can netcast outside the water? Interesting.

Why can this not be the same for Pursuit? It is ridiculous that a 'swampdwelling' ranger who has learned how to pursue people in a 'swamp' can, because of wanderlust, apply the same effect to mountains! It feels a bit meh to see it happen and to have it happen to you.

Out of interest, how many swampdwellers are explorer build?

There isn't exactly a plague of swampdweller explorers owning everyone.

Pursuit is a decent skill but it doesn't keep me up at night given that people with it generally have little or no ability to lag me.

Since the skill firing is based on the room you flee from being wilderness you can draw a ranger from wilderness into civilized intentionally. That transition can make for a bad day for the ranger, especially if you can lag them after.

The skill isn't limited to swamps. Plains get it as well and helpfile describes it as hometerrain. I haven't seen it as that hard to overcome unless insects were involved also. About three or four consecutive pursuits are the most I've ever seen, and it is usually more like one or two.

If you can't word in combat, stun, spinebreaker or other similar skills are a good counter. Like with most ranger skills, pursuit is most dangerous if you don't know a ranger is around.

Honestly I don't think anyone has ever done it before and it's not exactly clear that your abilities are nerfed outside your home terrain.

For example, Ancestral Spirit does *nothing* outside of the desert. Seriously, lowercase damage for 2 rounds of lag at hero level - and yet in your terrain it can curse, fear, etc. Symbiosis does like 33% less outside your terrain. The fact that just even those two are that bad outside your terrain, makes living as an outlander and being a desert terrain ranger pretty crappy.

So I guess I was screwed by bad game design?

If it says home terrain in helpfile, it should work everywhere. If it mentions a particular terrain type, it won't.

I was playing this fps and I wanted the range of the sniper rifle, the
ammo capacity and rate of fire of the SAW, and the weight of a pistol
I couldn't make that happen so it's bad game design.

I'm not saying there might not be something jacked with the whole
outlander desert ranger thing, and maybe it was a combination of
posts that set up the tone to sound that way, but you know I have to
keep typing because I love me a really pointless run-on sentence.
(Honestly the grandkids distracted me and I forgot what I was going to
say. Hahhahaha)
