What is the largest factor (besides skill in drum) for hitting a 5 hit lagging drum? With Olum I recall it happening fairly regularly from a dwarf nexun. Makes me think size is probably the biggest factor and then star and speed, but I'm not sure.

Strength.

Strength and skill might even be the only factors. I can't be sure of that offhand, but I'm positive they're the biggest ones.
