You are viewing a read-only archive of the Carrion Fields discussion forums built from a snapshot of the forum database on 2026-08-25. The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

#4369, "When a sceptre is a scepter."

Ok, whats the deal with two spellings of the same word in the CF world? It's like the way things were when the Shire was still as it was in the first age witht he sheriffs. Shouldn't it be one universal spelling?

Uh, what? The word is spelled both ways in our world, why should it be different in the cf world?

Why isn't that true in Thera? I have no idea what your point is, but it's perfectly clear that the word is spelled differently in real life so it's perfectly reasonable that it would be spelled differently in a fake world. How can you disagree with that? It just doesn't make sense to say otherwise.

What's more, Thera, like the real world, has lots of different languages, and dialects within languages. Hell, it has an infinite number of them since it's fake and we can just make #### up.

So why wouldn't you have different people in thera, some who say it's scepter and some who say it's sceptre?

Pretty textbook to me.

Consistency of this sort is a goal of the area team. It's why all new areas handle indenting, capitalization of room titles, etc. the same way. (And why older ones gradually get converted to this "look".) It's why everything in Thera is "gray" not "grey". And it's why we have "centers" and not "centres".

Doing the little touches consistently creates a smoother, more professional "feel". Also, in a text game where command like Examine or Locate Object discriminate between "scepter" and "sceptre", it's annoying to ask the players to keep track of which item is which spelling.

In short, we'll be using preferred American English spellings for all words, with all disputes mediated by the dictionary that lives on my desk.

I don't know about it looking or feeling more professional, I'd likely disagree with that (I think the different spellings actually add flavor, making each thing "feel" different when you read the description), but I'm perfectly happy to accept an assertion that conforming everything despite possible deviations is to give players an easier time with locate or examine.

My point was only that Vlad's original comment that it doesn't make language sense was, well, nonsensical. And your implied answer of course is that yah, it would be perfectly valid to have different spellings in-game, but for gameplay ooc reasons the decision was made to make spellings uniform.

Thanks for the post though, I was really only looking to explain to Vlad.

Is this really worth arguing over or even discussing?

According to my dictionary, "sceptre" is chiefly British, and the preferred American English spelling is "scepter".

Keeping with precedents established elsewhere ("armor", "color", etc.), I've changed all the references over to "scepter" for next reboot.
