#3981, "Rangers and Ranged Weapons"
|
Ranged weapons were mentioned on the Ask An Imm forum. Figured id throw out the opinions id always had concerning them, and their possible use by rangers.
Ranged weapons dont necessarily need to be fired from other rooms etc in order to be cool. They already exist in game as exotics so a massive assing of new ones wouldnt really be needed. Ive always though of single "rooms" as being fairly large, outdoor ones anyways. For example ive seen as many as 20 people at market square. By that same logic an "archer" could be standing back from combat firing away without being in a different room. As far as ammo goes, rather than being limited to an ammont, I figured a ranger might create a quiver of arrows that would eventually crumble.
Just some really quick brainstorming on possible skills. Split shot: fires one arrow each at multiple foes, up to three. Called shot: marginally similar to templars defense or hurl, couple different options for where to aim No good name: a defense skill based on how far you normally stay from combat. If your enemy isnt directly striking you you have a good chance to avoid things like area spells, warrior skills, etc. No good name: something similar to shove which only works if the person you try it on is allowing rescue and in your group. Would make them the current tank and allow you to fall back in combat, would aid in above skill.
These $0.02 brought to you by OS43.

The topic of ranged weapons have come up a number of times over the last 9 or so years I've been playing here (well, one person in particular seems to keep requesting them... Bacrie?). The main points against implementing it are:
1) There are many one-way exits which you could easily fire a weapon into, and your target would have no way of getting to you.
2) There are many mobs which should not move... cabal guards and guild guards come to mind. Are they supposed to sit idly by while you pelt them with arrows from 10 feet away?
3) Imagine if everybody in the mud had call lightning with no timer on it... since it is an aggressive ability with little to no risk, it would become more of a nuisance than a tactical advantage.
It would be alot easier to add ranged weapons in a new mud design than to slap it into the mud as it exists now. The way things are now, it would horribly break many aspects of the game with little to no real benefit to the playerbase or game balance.
As to your question about making the ranged weapons usable while in the same room as your target... I'm not sure what the use of that would be. Rangers can already serpent strike, pugil, kick, etc while in combat. In order to get special arrow attacks, that would assume you are not swinging a weapon (since the weapon damages you get from the bow assume you are already plucking off shots). We would need to take out the swinging capability of an exotic bow weapon to justify adding special shots. Making any changes to allow ranged weapons, without a major revamp, would really just be a half-assed effort that wouldn't really add anything to the mud in my opinion.

The entire point of my idea is to eliminate concerns with 1, 2 and 3.
Also I think you misunderstood my idea for implementation a bit. Bows would just be another weapon type like swords and axes, they would still "hit" like any other weapon. Youd have to use your imagination to realize that you were back from combat, even if mechanically you weren't. They would just have more fitting damage verbs. Your arrow decimates Jullias! instead of Your pound decimates Jullias! All that would need to be changed, from my limited point of view, is a new weapon type added. Theres already a lot of bows arounbd that could just be changed from exotic to bow. No new combat code would really need to be added, just some skills, effectively like warrior spec skills, that would only work with a bow-type weapon equipped.
Edit(added): I am NOT Bacrie.
