I understand how and why such a character might no longer be fun to play, particularly if the character is a power-hungry, megalo-maniacal tyrant with suicidal tendencies, but why not just delete?

Zulg set it up a long time ago so that if you're not showing up with your Imperial, you get auto-demoted. Longer you go, the more you get demoted, ultimately until you're Anathema. So it's not that they're becoming Anathema then not playing and auto-deleting, but that they've stopped playing their Imperial, and by the time they auto-delete, they've been Anathema'd.

I took roughly a 2.5 weeks break with my Oath and came back to find out that I was an Anathema.
