#3273, "For Nepenthe: Area Request (longish)"

I remember some old quote of yours where you stated you'd like to see the general ranking experience go more towards what the mausoleum is like for goodies between 20 and 30. Something extremely dangerous that requires constant attention and some degree of competence, the upside being a huge payoff. I recently played a goodie (first time in 3 years or so) and went through the maus with a couple different groups. Llevels and interesting new skills/spells came relatively quickly. Both trips ended in eventual mob deaths for most groupmembers as well as a fair number of close calls. Ranking actually became engrossing compared to the usual macro spamming of skills while skimming forums (the sort of thing i've become used to as a perennial player of evil characters.) The whole experience enhanced my interest in cf and the character.

While talking to other people I haven't come across a single person who dislikes the concept of ranking becoming more dangerous with a higher payoff (if anybody does please speak up, i'd be interested in hearing if anyone thinks this would negatively affect the mud and/or a player's cf experience). Recently I reconnected with some old high school friends who still casually play cf. When I talk to them and any of the newer players on irc the most common complaint I hear is that they'd really like to try that thief or anti-paladin, but they can't deal with the process of ranking them. A lot of novice and veteran players (myself included) default to a tanking class because they either don't have the time or patience to look for competent groupmates who can tank. I know that mages and other classes are supposed to have a harder time ranking, but I think that would still hold true. Anybody who's ever played a mage in the mausoleum knows it's a nerve racking experience. If anything goes bad you're usually the first to go.

I'd like to see a huge compound area go in that's specifically designed to make ranking more interactive. I honestly believe that you're one of the top couple of immortals who could do an excellent job on the area's design as well as creating a ranking environment that is challenging but not overwhelming. I think it'd be great if the area had a lot of different sets of mobs that favored different types of groups, especially ones containing classes that are generally passed over by most groups. Some mobs would favor excellent tanks with low hp by having a lot of attacks but no particularly great bonuses to hit. Other mobs would have only one powerful attack, favoring any ranking group that can reduce damage effectively. Some could be weaker mobs that cast spells for big damage. Other subtle factors could also be thrown in, like having invokers or necromancers be particularly useful in one particular area. It'd be a fairly big project but I think it could seriously improve the average mudder's cf experience, especially people with limited time available. Character's would have more time to devote to practice/exploration/roleplaying/playerkilling or whatever it is they particularly enjoy about cf (I think very few people would say ranking). I think roleplaying would actually improve. Players would have to spend more time finding and developing relationships with various types of classes that enable them to travel the various high payoff areas.

Anyways, I encourage any comments, suggestions, additions, or flames of this idea. Please post a mindless affirmation if you like it and want to see this sort of change to cf. Any other immortals who would be interested in coding this sort of area are encouraged to comment too... Nepenthe is just the first one to come to mind after seeing how cool the Silent Tower is and remembering that quote.

-Cathoir

As an afterthought, the area should be nosum too. I'd like to see it be dangerous in both mobs and other pk's... but i'd also like to see it be dangerous to the pk groups as well. Huge cheesy summoning groups could ruin it.

Should elements of what Cathoir is talking about not already be laid down so when someone new comes to write an area they get a good idea as to what makes an area in CF 'interesting'.

I would love to see this. I loathe ranking. Absolutely despise it with a passion unrivaled. I also tend to web surf 90% of the time I am ranking, even on rp instense characters because any rp I could be doing will likely be tedious work through the skill spamming I do to make ranking go as fast as possible. If there were an area that I had to actually pay attention in order to live (note: perrenial evil) and use multiple tactics (instead of SpamMaxDamage(tm)) I think I perhaps my dislike of ranking might drop a bit, perhaps even make it semi-enjoyable.

You give the maus as an example.

There are plenty of places where most 3 character combos can rank at some risk for high reward. If you take Isildur's ranking list, I'm often in those places while a good ten ranks below his suggested rank range, and pulling in great exp for it.

If you want high risk and high reward, just start ranking in areas that you currently consider too hard for you because of your level. You get good exp, and the price is that it is harder to stay alive. However, a well organised (by which I mean everyone agrees on their role and keeps a cool head when things go wrong) group can handle things a far stronger but less organised group cannot.

It's not really "high risk" to rank in an area where the mobs aren't aggro, don't assist one another, and from which you can easily word.

The number one reason I tend to avoid the maus is that it's so hard to get away if another group comes to attack you.

Kuo-toa,
an explore area with a "veil" in,
a magical explore area with mixed races in that you wouldn't normally expect to mix,
barovian keep,
ruins of deep (no teleport only),
drow city,
underdark sea,
blingdenstone (to a lesser extent),
high lord's (at lower rank demons are aggro and can bounce you around while acid blasting),
an explore area with bubbles in it,
an explore area with riddles.

But you didn't specify any of those. You just said you use areas at a rank significantly lower than what's suggested in my list. For all I know you were talking about the elemental temple. Battlefield. Etc.

I know a lot of the areas you mentioned, for the most part they either aren't as high payoff or aren't nearly as dangerous or as quick as the maus (huge masses of agro mobs wandering around in a noteleport norecall area). I haven't yet tried out the mount, but i'd really like to. I hear things can get very interesting in there in addition to being fast ranking. I think warrior spec'd mobs with abusable vulns, high damrolls, and a high xp payoff are a great idea. Also, I noticed a distinct lack of these sort of areas for ranking sub 35 or so in your list, especially for evils. A competent group will of course make any ranking trip go smoother, but i've never worried about taking newbies to the drow city, Shadar, or that fun little underwater area. The maus is the only place I will pass on groupmates who seem like they might get me killed.

I was ranking in Barovia as an evil at level 26, with a lvl 22 warrior and a level 20 something conjurer. Evil's can learn well off evil creatures, remember. Evil ranking options are better than good's these days, although evils lack the solidity of having paladins.

Also, I believe Shadar can be norecall at times. That makes it pretty dangerous.

That'd be cool to see.

I don't know that I have the free time at the moment to work up something like that, but I'll think on it.

Sounds good. The area would be a lot of work but I really think that this sort of thing would see an absolutely huge return as far as positive affects on the mud relative to the time spent doing it.
