You are viewing a read-only archive of the Carrion Fields discussion forums built from a snapshot of the forum database on 2026-08-25. The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

Caveat: this may or may not already be in effect.

I've always thought certain skills should have a penalty attached to them when the target can see the attacker. Mostly stealthy type skills that require the attacker to maneuver into close proximity to the target before striking. Ex. blackjack, strangle, knockout poison, possibly choke.

From a realism point of view, it seems like it should be much easier to sneak up behind someone and clap a poisoned cloth around his face when he can't see you creeping up.

From a gameplay point of view this would mainly hurt thieves and benefit duergar and assassins. Assassins' ability to strangle suffers but they gain a leg up vs. thieves and strangle isn't widely used anyway. Duergar win any way you slice it.

To mitigate the effect of the tweak, maybe boost how often they work against people who *can't* see the thief/assassin/whip-spec.

By "can't see" I'm including blindness, dirt in their eyes, lack of detect invisible (when the attacker is invisible), etc.

This is generally incorporated into skills where it makes sense.

I hazily remember fighting a duerg pole/hand spec with one of my assassins about a year ago. I would initiate with dust to bypass charge set, but then if he fled and I would follow him and initiate with murder, charge set would kick in. I always thought this seemed a bit wierd, cause he was still blind.

Also, have you thought about slow/haste in these sorts of situations? It seems they would affect the likeliness of blackjack/ etc also.

Cheers,
Romanul.

Blindness doesn't negate the possibility of charge set, and isn't meant to.

Hmm. Maybe it's just a matter of degree then. Last time I played a thief, blackjack seemed to work about as well against assassins and other thieves as it did against everyone else.
