#3052, "Mud Reboots"
|
Are all these constant reboots really necessary? Seriously, are the majority of them fixing serious bugs and such or are they just putting in new socials or fixing very minor things? I remember a time when I felt comfortable dropping nice things in cabal's pits to encourage lowbies to join up and help the cabal out. It was also nice when mob eq wasn't constantly being repop'd by a reboot... it'd really give you a chance against the locate object spammers cause you could kill the mob and something would often come back on the next round. I don't know anything about the evolution of CF's code, but I don't really remember ever having multiple daily reboots until within the past few years, I do remember a lot of trying to break into cabals solely for trying to steal things from their pit... maybe i'm off, wouldn't be the first time.

Planned reboots are planned for a reason. NT,

Constant? Here are the last 7 reboots. The last 3 were actual reboots, the previous 4 were crashes. 1 planned reboot a day is hardly constant.

The last 3 planned reboots were me. The first was an enormous fundamental change to the way morale is handled. The second was because one piece of said morale change was screwed. The third was to put in a handful of new imm tools.

This makes me smile, because you think that the majority of our downtimes are planned...not crashes.

I don't think we ever have multiple planned reboots unless absolutely necessary by something that is big and broken and usually causing us to crash incessantly.
My personal feeling on reboots (and since I do a majority of them...) is that I won't reboot unless the code absolutly needs to be updated or there is enough small pieces of churn in the code (read the bug board, tweak announcements, etc) and our uptime has been stable (more than 24 hours).
Honestly...a reboot a day isn't bad, and yet we still go multiple days without them.So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Is stuff like new socials or minor area/bug fixes general rationale for reboots? You sound like the ####ing US government.

People complain it doesn't reboot enough because of the seemingly endless campaign to eliminate player cash spots. Selling things to shoppies is a primary source of income for a lot of people. Mostly i'm just a little disappointed with cabal wars as of late. Just noticed that every time I raid or head to my own cabal there's almost never anything at the pits. I'd like to see a little piece of code similar to corpse reboot deal where stuff stays around after a reboot. Maybe make the code only apply to stuff actually IN the pit and place some sort of limit on the number of items the pit can hold at any given time (no more than 40 items or so) for some game balance. Would be a nice little change to encourage lower level types to join cabals and also makes people a bit ballsier knowing a basic set awaits them if they die.
