#2924, "Conjurer familiar suggestion"

I think most of the playerbase will agree that conjurer familiars are rather unbalanced. I'm not that much of a character perfectionist but even I will delete and reroll if I get the imp. The monkey's usefulness may outweigh the loss of detect hidden, but the imp, faerie dragon, and coyote are grossly underpowered compared to some of the best familiars. I propose that familiar be changed to a format similar to druid's call of the Wild and given a short timer (something between 10 and 15 hours maybe). Every conjurer will have access to the same set of familiars depending on where they cast the spell. This would be an excellent step towards fleshing out a somewhat shallow class (I do appreciate the modifications to elementals, that was a gigantic step in the right direction for the class). New familiars would more specialized and generally restricted to only one form of usefulness. Here are some quick suggestions for basic archetypes off the top of my head.

Sentinels-A couple familiars that will give the conjurer an echo if somebody walks into the room. Each familiar will be fairly weak and limited to only one type of detect. They can be conjured in places where it would be appropriate to the detect. If you're feeling generous, gives them some sort of ability to hide themselves in certain types of terrain.

Mana regen-A couple familiars that are similar to the current one with that effect. Gives conjurer the luxury of having to sleep less (not fun) but is extremely fragile. Can find them if you conjurer in mystical type forests or other havens of magic.

Combat-A couple familiars that are significantly useful until about the level a conjurer gets lightbind/darkbind. Have a defense one that is useful for tanking around 1-3 mobs per ranking round. Have an offense one that hits for a decent amount of damage. Mix it up some, maybe have one that is really hard to parry and hits for EVISCERATES for when you're ranking on higher level mobs with a good tank, and then have one that gets a lot of attacks for less damage for when you have to stick with low xp mobs. Can be conjured just about everywhere.

Pure Detect-A familiar or two that is around for the sole purpose of dectect hidden. Give them a little something defensive to allow the conjurer to walk around with and not be TOO woried about a familiar death.

Scout familiars-Familiars that can fly around but have no abiliy to detect hidden/invis/camo. Can conjure them around mountain peaks.

Utility casting familiars-Familiars that are designed purely for combat support. Can be very useful or very detrimental to a conjurers attack, generally only useful for higher level conjurers that can conjure it with a decent amount of hps. Adds an element of finesse to a generally simplistic attack class. Have their spell arsenal be just useful enough to want to take the chance of having them around in a fight, stuff like cure serious, poison, weaken, etc... Have the poison and weaken and stuff land a lot but be low level, like a -5 str weaken or a poison that hits for MUTILATES and lasts 4 hours or so.

The list can go on and on. Eavesdropping familiars, talking familiars, crappy stealing familiars, etc...

Anyways, just some ideas I think would add depth to the class as well as make them tremendously more fun to play. I always wanted to play a druid for Call of the Wild but never wanted to deal with the time you have to spend in the wilderness to have full effectiveness. The concept of just kind of wandering around the mud tinkering with areas to see what interesting little utility use animals I can get has always been a whole lot of fun.

Imps have a wonderful ability. That's all there is to it.

Has their ability been modified since a year or so ago? Maybe, just maybe, if they allow the imp to cast it at a higher level it'd be somewhere even remotely close to the raven or quasit. Cursing lowbies is fun and all, but man, those other evil familiars are both REALLY good.

Faerie Dragon how do I love thee? Let me count the ways:

1) You are a constant supply of faerie fog for zero mana. Perfect for those who fear thieves/assassins such as myself. Also, using the dragon's fog can make you capable of detecting some things/people who cannot be fogged.

2) You dish out ~2 Massacres a round on average at the middle ranks.

3) You don't exactly stink at tanking.

4) You have some minor inherent damage resist (not 100% sure)

5) You can wake me up from some types of sleep. This is incredibly under-utilized.

6) You automatically open unlocked doors for exploring while I'm sleeping safely in my guild. I'd put the faerie dragon above trannies for exploration potential. First of all, you don't have to rank high to get started, and secondly duo only lasts like what 10 hours? And popping in and out is a pain.

-------------------------------------

I'll take the faerie dragon over detect hidden or camo any time.

Wow, because that is much better than detecting them with ####ing detect hidde. Lagging your familiar two rounds infront of a thief..is kinda stupid, especially as it will fog them in one of uhm 5 tries?

2) You dish out ~2 Massacres a round on average at the middle ranks.

Congratulations, but it is not true sadly. And still not worth it as your familiar should not fight.

3) You don't exactly stink at tanking.

Or tank, and seriously. Good conjurers dont exactly stink at tanking anyway.

4) You have some minor inherent damage resist (not 100% sure)

Eh? Dont know, would be good for that backstabbing thief when you tried to fog him for the 12th time.

5) You can wake me up from some types of sleep. This is incredibly under-utilized.

Why is that, perhaps because you have to have a familiar conjured all the time, with the dangers that follows. And..how often do a conjurer get slept. If you walk around with transplendant, well ouch necro. If you walk around with angel, well ouch necro.

6) You automatically open unlocked doors for exploring while I'm sleeping safely in my guild. I'd put the faerie dragon above trannies for exploration potential. First of all, you don't have to rank high to get started, and secondly duo only lasts like what 10 hours? And popping in and out is a pain.

Wow, you cannot pick up items.

I'm not saying the faerie dragon is totally worthless and should be beefed up, but those who say it is the best is full of ####.

I'm with the other when it comes to faerie dragons, but if I were going to be upset about any familiar, it would be the monkey. The ability to steal from anything without risk used to make the monkey over-powered I'd say, but the modification of a few months ago makes stealing with the monkey virtually impossible, in my experience. But mabe I was just a dumbass. Without a usable steal the monkey seems distinctly substandard, but all familiars are incredibly useful, even if they had no abilities no attacks and one hitpoint.

Yea, I haven't had the monkey or heard much about them since the changes. I heard their ability to steal was toned down but didn't know it was that bad. I agree that all familiars are useful, but the broad spectrum between how useful certain familiars are over others seems a bit out of control.

You, my friend, are smoking purple crack.

My last conji had faerie dragon. Not only did I get my first five pk wins ONLY with the faerie dragon while sitting safely in my guild...but I can not count on both hands the number of times my faerie dragon saved me ( as well as group mates) from certain death by basically 100% negating the main offensive weapon of a certain class.

Not to mention that it gives a good conji the ability to rank from familiar to conjure ....solo....while sitting in their guild.

Yeah, that's a bad familiar....

Wow, so it's really useful up to about 25. While that other power is marginally useful, I don't think any skilled player will say they'd rather have the faerie dragon than the owl. Unless the only slow prep they know of is the one your faerie dragon allows you to use, but I can think quite a few others that are better. Similarly, most skilled players wouldn't have those sort of problems handling necromancers as a goodie conjurer.

If that's true, then it's been a long time since there has been a passable necromancer.

It wouldn't be a familiar anymore if it was a variety of creatures that a conjie called.

I've never considered any of the familiars to be that bad, and I've had faerie dragon and imp as my only two.

Sure, I wanted coyote (not sure why you don't like them), but when I kept my faerie dragon I realised that it wasn't so bad a familiar after all.

Personally, I think that because of a conjie's raw power, they shouldn't get detect hidden at all. A flying familiar that can see non-hidden people is good enough imho, but if evil conjies are considered to need more perks, let the raven see hidden.

Never thought i'd have a use for Comp Lit: Faerie Tales and Fables other than an easy A. There are plenty of variations where a magic user actually has a number of different familiars.
