You are viewing a read-only archive of the Carrion Fields discussion forums built from a snapshot of the forum database on 2026-08-25. The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

Some of the special-purpose forums are listed below along with their replacements (as of writing):

#2562, "Here's an idea"

Don't know how whacked-out this is, but I recently had an idea about classes. I haven't thought too much about the cons about it, so it may be real crazy, but I thought I'd shoot it at the CF populace.

Classes and races are always seen in the who list, group command, look, etc. I think seeing the race is good, as it's usually obvious in a realism POV. But I was thinking that, perhaps, classes shouldn't be obvious. Imagine CF where you meet people without knowing their profession and it only becomes known when you rank or fight with them. I think it adds a good bit of mystery and gives weight to the knowledge of a person's class. I like to think of it like the gold change. It's much more scarce, but at the same time, more valuable. I think people would pay more attention to people's descriptions as they would try to find out their class by it. It would probably (heh) change CF in a big way, but I think it'd be in a good way. People would be more cautious in PK situations and it would create a larger enviroment of strategy and the like.

What do you think?

You could use a lot of subterfuge and deceit like this.

You would also have to get rid of class specific titles as everyone would just go back to using that big sub list. So then you'd end up with everyone have bland titles like Adventurer (or rarely an imm given title), and then I'd never be able to remember the names of the people I know. (I have a name issue, but anything other than names I remember... don't ask). It sounds decent, but there would be a lot of change and I'm not sure the benefit (if it would really be one) would be worth the effort.

Imagine my chagrin when the two mystery people I just asked to rank with me are both transmuters. Like me.

but it's not like you can't ask what their classes are before-hand.
