You are viewing a read-only archive of the Carrion Fields discussion forums built from a snapshot of the forum database on 2026-08-25. The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

#2481, "Think command"

I can't seem to search well enough to come up with the former topics on having a think command, but I'm going to make a fatal move here and assume that it was turned down due to not enough of a requirement with role, say, and 'tell self' as well as no desire to put in the massive coding required...

But..

Definition: The think command is a way to express oneself during situations that do not lend themselves readily to sit down and come up with a role entry, such as feelings towards individual characters, a rationale for using a certain action, a clarification of an action in the presence of an Immortal, a speaking aid, and countless other situations. Use of the think command is, obviously, in character, and should never be used to express out of character comments; this is what pray, note, email, and these forums are for.

Specifics: Thinking is viewable by the character as well as Immortals. If feasible, create a logging system that can separate thoughts not just chronologically but by character. When an Immortal wants to learn more about a mortal, they can access all logs of the mortal's thoughts with one easy command. If not jaded from coding the system yet, include some footnotes to be placed by Immortals that can help explain or elaborate on the context of the thought(s).

Restrictions: Think warcry. Abuse of the think command will result in it being removed from the character, and should have a lag associated to prevent taking Zulghinlour's concentration away from his axe-polishing.

Examples of situational use (Disclaimer: All thoughts are greatly exaggerated to show the underlying circumstances they could be used in. An Immortal would be able to piece together a PK, induction, empowerment, etc. as having chronological significance with the thought. Further on, I show actual, applicable examples of a mortal using think on CF).
--------
think Well jeez louis, I just killed that evil necromancer. I feel so much regret for having taken his life, but I must shed blood if I wish to see Thera free of tyranny and senseless destruction.

Shokai uses command: lookup MaranApplicant
Shokai dons his reading glasses, and peruses quietly to himself.
Shokai smiles.
--------
think !@#$%^&*. I can't believe that new Tribunal Imm just booted me, I think I'm going to go post on Dioxide's to make myself feel better for breaking the cardinal respect rule. If only I had the foresight to think about how my character hates this new Tribunal and used the think command to convey that emotion. And I should remember that in the CF world a douchebag is taken literally, so I should come up with a less insulting, and more fitting thought to represent my emotion.

TribunalImm footnotes to Ex-Tribunal's thoughtlog: 'Not handling rejection well. If Sphere != Pride, deny = 1. Else pat back.'
TribunalImm smiles.
--------
think The Jackal would be glad to see me decieving this blinded elf into trusting me with his life, and will grow in power when his broken soul is offered.

Tanadin smiles.
--------
Orc grunts something incomprehensable, not amused by his circumstances.
think Gee, this elf is really starting to get to me, her fair skin and warm smile mocking me and the horrible life her kind has caused me to lead. Since I cannot express my feelings of frustration and rage with fluent speech, I think I'm just going to bash her now.
*snip*
Thrakburzug creates a necklace of elf-bones.
Thrakburzug smiles.
--------
think Gee this lich quest sure is brutal. It's a shame I'm sphere strength and can't show my weakness, but I sure do wish I could get a kick in the right direction from someone up there.
--------
You say 'And that, Rhegma, is why I cull unborn fetuses to help build the great city of Rhegma.'
Rhegma scratches his head with a confused look on his face.
think 'I can see Rhegma is having trouble understanding my lisp, but I hope he realizes that is why I cull unborn fetuses to help build the great city of Rhegma.'
Rhegma says 'Ohh, ith thath whath yoo thaith?
You scratch your head with a confused look on your face.
--------

CF-world examples:
think I truly dislike Urden, and will usurp him when I am strong enough.
think Let the souls released from the cursed weapon of Palan find a final resting place in Elysium.
think My forest home, how it burns. The Imperials will pay dearly for their injustices.
think This red giant burns with strength and hatred I have never seen, but his eyes reveal alterior motives hiding within his axe-wielding hands. I will let him within the Grinning Skull Village, but will be sure to watch him closely.
think The Skyborn stands before me strong, willful, and blazing, but I still sense the deep losses and regret he must face within his forlorn eyes.

Conclusion: The original idea for think is attributed to that eternal, distrustful council in the Academy, therefore I regretably waive my intellectual property. I think that the roleplaying value of having a 'think' command is well worth the coding effort needed, and would help to bring the mortals and Immortals closer in understanding one another, as well as add another dimension to helping immerse oneself into the character, as well as understand and define how the character thinks. Thanks for your time, sorry for the clutter.

Just kidding. I'm giving uses of various thoughts, one thought a Scion might have is backstabbing. You're the most famous Scion I know, so I used you. Don't worry, you're loved.

It isn't necessarily massive coding. However, you're right that the last time this was brought up the arrow pointed at it was that it is redundant with existing commands. To be honest, your examples serve to reinforce that belief for me, rather than dispel it.

Thanks for your input, I'll try to explain my reasoning and rationale spliced with personal experience.

I tend to use the role function as a way to define the background of my character and tie in game events that would show him evolving, such as cabal induction or heroing. The addition of a think function would help to further define the specific ins and outs of a character and how he handles "day-to-day" life in Thera.

Oftentimes I walk around and come across situations or things that my character would have strong feelings towards. Usually, I'm not in a position or desire to sit down and develop that thought into how it would influentially affect my character into a role addition. I also have difficulty truly understanding some of my characters unless I sit down and re-read my role, go over my desc and really think about my sphere and who I'm follwing. With a 'think' command, I don't doubt that in mundane CF life I would be able to create little perks and insights that would define who my character is more fully.

The examples I provided are meant to show how some circumstances a mortal finds himself in do not lend themselves well to give a chance to define the character (although, in truth, I have never used 'tell self', and more truth, doubt I ever will).

The benefits to the other Immortals and you would be another, different tool to evaluate character performance; and not just a supplement for role and the other tools. Thinking would be a way for the Immortal to understand how the character responds to situational change on CF, and can be another way to draw an Immortal's attention when something significant to the individual character is happening.

To conclude, I think of role, description, and sphere as a broad, general definition of a character, while 'think' would be used to pinpoint specific, mundane, and average thoughts of the character.
