You are viewing a read-only archive of the Carrion Fields discussion forums built from a snapshot of the forum database on 2026-08-25. The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

#19012, "character expectations/disappointment"

There is one idea and viewpoint that I have found common with many deletion threads that I think is faulty, and worse, leads to a player not having fun with the game.

Most of these people agree, A role is "valid" as long as it makes a passing nod at sense, is at least internally consistent, and is adhered to.

For example. A drow Tribunal Orderly evil who goes out of his way to get away with whatever he can get away with.

That is a valid role. Heck, if you can pull it off, I'd probably want to interact with you as either an ally or enemy.

The problem comes in when these people seem to not understand something.

They have the right to play that role.

BUT.

Other people, playing THEIR roles, have an EQUAL right to react to your character in a way that fits their role.

For example. An Elf tribunal leader Orderly Good who goes out of his way to demote/boot/refuse to promote the afore mentioned drow tribunal.

that too, is a valid role.

In my time as Odrirg, and as Gmuer, and Malzhaalohn(however it was spelled) I had a number of runins with tribunals who seemed to be under the impression that they had the right to play their role, but I didn't have the right to react to their role as my character should react.

These people invariably came to the forums and complained that they weren't "allowed" to play their role, and they should have been allowed to because it was a valid role.

The point is that yes, their role was valid. And they are "allowed" to play it.

The only thing they weren't "allowed" to do, was play their role with zero consequences.

If those players would just understand that Roleplay is in essence about interplay between different people and how they react differently to each other in different situations, instead of roleplay being "I do what I want, and noone is allowed to stop me" I think they would find much more enjoyment in the game.

Because then you can enjoy even the down times in cf, instead of hating it when you are down and only wanting to be up.

This is how I had fun when Odrirg was busted from Vindie to magistrate of Seantryn, and worked back up to vindie.

This is how I had fun when Maahlzalohn got booted right out of the cabal from the Provost spot, and worked his way back in.

It was the interactions that were fun. Not the fact that Everything was coming up roses for me.
