As a player that frequents that area, I can tell you that it does add to the playing experience and is not too much for a number of reasons. The main being that it is very easy to circumvent that problem you have there. All it involves is using the 'look' command. You're upset because a mob killed you with something you didn't expect. That's going to happen frequently when you play this game. When it does happen you have the choice of learning from it or complaining that it's unfair and not fun. I'm not going to say this applies to all areas but for this particular area it does. The obvious answer would be not to fight those elven elders alone at your current level. Or just that specific elven elder.

Might want to avoid that guy for a level or three. Then, take him and use the wand on others.

Some elders hold them, others do not. If leveling up there is the option you want to take, then consider fighting the ones that don't have wands.
