I'm going to approach the issue of losing my restrung talismans from a different angle. How about making it so the winged nightwalkers deposit what they steal next to the big nightwalker in the ruins of Maethien? When my talismans were stolen I tried to locate them as soon as I realized they were gone and they were nowhere to be found. This leads me to believe that the nightwalker that swiped them poofed and took my stuff with them. If they drop the stuff somewhere it gives everybody an opportunity, albeit in the form of a tough task, to get their stuff back. How about it?

Sure, it is tough for a solo char, or maybe for a small group. It isn't tough for a large well-balanced group.

I used to just accept that my sweet gear was going to be stolen unless I stashed it somewhere first.

Several villagers had gripes with this having their nice weapons stolen and the simple response was "drop it before you enter". I usually find a nice "safe" (no area is totally safe) and drop it there, there are a TON of room you can deposit items in that area alone.
