The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

#17540, "Conjurer helpfile suggestion"

Add mention that the nature of Smoke mephits and Nightgaunts is a dark one. Currently, there is very little to hint that they are evil beings unless you conjure one and have up detect align.

Many newbies seem to conjure smoke mephits as goodie/fortress wannabies and waste the practice when someone kindly points out they are dark, evil things they're using. Most have heard of nightgaunts being evil by 40 or at least are getting detect invis from their archon. As a beginner (or a forgetful Vet) smoke mephits are a real clencher when it comes to trying to roleplay good aligns. Its hard to say 'I'm completely against demons, they suck!' when you've been unwittingly bringing unbound darkness in to fog out thieves for years. I'd make a case to make the smoke mephit neutral but its too much effort :p And besides, unless you get a coyote, your familiar will cover it fine.
