You are viewing a read-only archive of the Carrion Fields discussion forums built from a snapshot of the forum database on 2026-08-25. The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

#1262, "Spell Renewal"

Anyone who has played a mage knows, and probably hates, when there is
a crucial spell that has one or two hours on it, and that it might
drop before a fight is over. In the case of shifters, stone skin is
a big one. I know mages get cancellation, and what have you...BUT,
why not allow more spells the "renewing" capacity of, say, something
like "water breathing"? This would eliminate something of an annoyance,
I believe, without tipping the fragile "balance".

This is why deshield is overpowered and one of the things that makes invoker incredibly hard to kill.

Not overpowered...it's completely logical...just like my suggestion.

If it had no lag, then it might be overpowered. Warriors get two specs,
so that can be utilized to really screw an invoker over.

I could argue that every Legacy is overpowered...that any dam roll
above 40 is overpowered...etc, etc. But they're not. They are logical.

How about things like tigerclaw, deafen, and worldbind? Any of those
can make over half the classes in the game nearly powerless...and you
are calling "deshield" and "spell renewal" overpowered?

This is blatantly untrue.

How? Would it throw game balance out of whack for every spell and
every class? Sure, it probably would. That's why picking and choosing
this and that is what I'm striving for here. You guys did it for
water breathing....in an RP sense that's saying that the mages of Thera
probably thought it would be crucial to be able to renew the spell
during its duration. Why would they not do the same for other crucial
spells? I understand the problem of seeing a permanently wraith'd
necro, but maybe you can think of some middle-ground that hasn't yet
been thought of?

(You're becoming Zulgh'ish...though you will probably take that as a
compliment.)

Not being able to renew water breathing can kill you. Stone skin is a perk
