You are viewing a read-only archive of the Carrion Fields discussion forums built from a snapshot of the forum database on 2026-08-25. The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

I have to say for a long time I have had two problems with Dern.
First its some of the nicest dwarf-only gear in the game.
Second people who blithely killed him with absolutely NO RP angle whatsoever.

Now I will say that as Ysal I killed Dern, but did it in an RP way which totally Jived with Ysal's Role. Some nice IMM even chimed in and made it even more contentious between Dern and Ysal, and it came down to almost a grudge match. Soddin aprons indeed! Ya Bastid!
But I have seen dwarf pally's roll him with not a blink or thought given to try and make it RP'd.

Should dwarves kill other dwarves? From the Paragon's perspective if two dwarves have an issue with each other then there is a high probability that its coming to blows before its settled. Paragon followers are the epitome of dwarven traits, so its not out of the question they will kill other dwarves, but they sure as the stink from an orcs arse, better have a good reason.
If its just for shiny things with no RP, or for gaining experience, then Hell no!

There has been some discussion over time as to addressing the Dern issue, Aarn I think saw it the same way as I do. Maybe I will try and rekindle the discussion and make it more questy.

There really isn't a lot of reason for neutral dwarven berserker to be in that part of the underdark, in the middle of a dark-elf city. Not Geographically, politically or otherwise. And I don't know if I remember correctly but wasn't he non-aggro and was turned aggro later so that dwarves actually had an RP option other than straightforward murder in handling him? Might be misremembering that, can't remember what changed about him in the mini refurb of Teth Azaleth but yeah.

If I ever imm, those dark-elves are going to get a clearer background. What's the crack with Lloth in a CF anyway? Still pretty much using the Forgotten Realms lore as an explanation?

With some pretty heavy differences from the FR lore. IIRC has, he has come back in several incarnations since then, most recent being Karakan (sp?)?

And I argue that from two sides.

OOC: Originally the mob was Thibbledorf Pwent, and was created in a time when roleplay was a TON less restrictive on the actions that your character could take. I remember early in my CF career goodies would often kill good aligned mobs for keys, frostband scimitar or whatever else with 0 repercussions.

The original intention for Pwent (now renamed Dern to make CF landscape unique) was for dwarves to be able to kill him and wear his dwarf-only gear.

IC: Dern burrowed his way into the drow city, got stuck and lost his mind. He's a shell of his former self, with no dwarf left in him, lashing out at whatever comes near. Killing him is the merciful and righteous thing to do.

And as an aside, I've had at least 4 tattooed, cabaled dwarves - three of which were cabal leaders, and one a heroimm - that all killed Dern whenever they needed his gear without any interference from the staff.

I am just curious to know Ysal's take, as she is the patron imm of dwarves.
