The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. #603, "Weapon Skill vs weapon prog"

If you dont have the skill or the skill practiced can we look at having the progs of said weapon not going off? IE eagle staff in the hands of a necromancer. How can you skillfully trip someone or whirl it to disarm if you dont even know which way is up or down on it? Much less when you dont even know how to even really hit anyone with it..

Can you think of any other examples in which this is relevant?

In the case I bet you're thinking of, the necromancer may well have the staff skill plenty high at that moment.

Well, in the general case you are correct, but in the specific case a necro can, for a time, have the staff skill.

I was only responding to Quixotic response about the OP possibly refering to trip and not the weapon skill staff. Since staff is not in the general skill set of the class I doubt the OP was refering to trip.

I suppose I could have been more exact and said that Necro's cannot train to use the staff skill at level 1 like all other classes that have the staff skill.

Just like a bard might not have Holy Word, but be wearing the helm of Galadriel. The weapon's "inherent ability" is entwined to the wielder/wearer on contact.

Staff works the same way, I'd imagine.

As do those sexy, sexy phylacteries.
