#197, "Safety PC-Transfers when the game crashes"
|
Idea: Designate a room at the beginning of every non-area_explore area where, in the occurance of a crash, anyone in the area is transferred to.
Intent: Removes the issue where a person logs back in only to get cut down two seconds later by the aggro mobs he or she had just painstakingly killed.
Positive side-effect: Newbies don't get demoralized.
Negative side-effect: Sometimes this would be an inconvenience. However, by and large I think it would be friggin great.
I think this idea is justifiable because a game crash is an OOC event that can cause serious friggin disaster from an IC standpoint (come on, we have all experienced this, and it sucks). The safety-transfer code would be equally OOC and hard to explain IC, but hey it's a lot better than getting mowed down and getting an unfair XP hole.
Not every area should have this. I recommend only areas that have aggro mobs in them. Cities, cabals, etc., should be left alone.
(This is probably a lot to code...I really don't know, but it could be a more long-term, slow adjustment type-thing)

It would be a large project, but not beyond reason.
The problems come from everyone knows exactly where you will log in after the crash/reboot. And if the assassin is stalking you in the same area when the crash happens, you guys get to log into the same room and thus the fight begins. Another problem is, someone tells me that you are in the Mausoleum, I start making my way there while you fight the Dracolich. It crashes when I'm almost there. It guarantees to put you in a spot (entrance of the Maus) where I can get to you much easier instead of walking/finding my way to you.
Looking through the logs briefly, dying to aggros after a crash/reboot is a smaller cause of death than teleport, which makes me think the benefits of this change aren't worth the cost. So long, and thanks for all the fish!

what about putting you into a small (2 tic or so)ghost-like state after a crash if your in an area-explore? That would possibly alleviate the complexity and also the inherent preconceived locational problems. Of course it proposes newer problems but I think from a code complexity ti shouldn't be too bad?

Then you get a free run past whatever potential baddies are further on than where you currently are. I'm pretty sure I could make it through a big chunk of Dis (6th circle of hell), in 2 ticks.
From a coding standpoint, the hard part is that we don't know that you came back from a crash. The way charmies/servitors are done is tricky and doesn't translate to players. So long, and thanks for all the fish!

I would think only area explores where lots of danger abounds and the risks of assass and the like are limited would be good. I don't see the maus as necessarily needing it. I do see the Inferno needing it, as well as Trothon and a few other places. I wouldn't think Organia needs it. Honestly, I've died to the maus a time or two from crashes, but hardly anyone seems to learn there anymore. Crashes are also much less frequent than in those days.

I'm confused... writing crashed=1 to the pfile after login and crashed=0 to the pfile upon logout wouldn't do it? If crashed==1 upon login (before the write, obviously) then it's a crash.
Also, what I would suggest is that you a choice between the safe-spot and the room you were in pre-crash.

Hell trips. I know I would be seriously pissed off if a hell group of mine died to a crash in Dis, or further off - even worse. It can be a solid several hours of work to get down in the first place, not to mention the time spent gathering stuff to go, etc. While teleport deaths happen a lot, you will always have a chance to teleport again. Able hell groups do not come together often. These days it looks like it's more of a once in a character or once in a lifetime chance, instead of something you can just shrug off and say, oh well, we'll do it tomorrow, and tell 5 people to schedule another 6 hours.
While it's a freak occasion, the negative implications can be really dramatic.
