You are viewing a read-only archive of the Carrion Fields discussion forums built from a snapshot of the forum database on 2026-08-25. The search page works, though it is not as sophisticated as the old forum search. This archive encompasses approximately 25 years of CF discussion. Today, that discussion continues on Discord (see the main website for a link).

#186, "On Roles and Empowerment"

I saw this on the "other" board and wanted to comment. I don't like empowering without a role in general, and that includes a 1-2 sentence role that doesn't say much. I do understand the idea of saying I'm going to start this character like an empty canvas and build it up and write the role as I go, and I can appreciate that, but if you want to do it don't be afraid to put in a role chapter that spells that out for me. You can say I decided to be a paladin and I'm going to base a lot of this character off of what happens in the first empowerment. I'm down with that. But just saying I'm a guy with a sword and I like to fight sort of puts me off. Mainly because at first glance it just reads like laziness, and further because it does take a chunk of time and energy to do empowerments I'm less excited about doing them if the character feels throw-away. If you've put time and energy into writing a serious role it tells me you have true intentions of playing the character. If you slap together a 2 line role and come to me for empowerment I feel like maybe you just want to test out the new paladins not seriously or the like. I get really frustrated when people delete right after I empower them (though I would really like to know if people did that BECAUSE of the empowerment. Let me know so I can make it better).

So! A small rant, but I wanted to lay that out there. Ask questions if you want.
