#95, "Some musings on Daevryn"
|
I've had some fun followers as Daevryn so far, although a lot are falling outside of my original vision. Granted, I'm still getting used to playing the character of Daevryn and there's a lot about his RP that's still not set in stone... however, I thought it might be interesting/helpful to talk at some greater length about what I'd originally had in mind. The thought is, if you understand my vision better as you make a Daevryn character, we'll both have more fun with it.
Some form of some of this will probably make it into the Mansion at some point, although other parts of it don't translate well into anything IC.
Some excerpts from my original writeup for him:
Daevryn is a god of ambition, competition, and the deserved pride in success. There is, he teaches, no shame in having a lust for the things you lack, be they material wealth, the respect of your peers, or the pleasures of a desirable mate. It is mortals' constant dissatisfaction and thirst for ever more in life that brings out what is best in them: ingenuity, drive, and a strong work ethic. These things make them more than simple animals and permit them to achieve a kind of immortality by leaving behind a legacy which outlives their mortal body. To achieve your desires through excellence is the greatest of things; let your competitors be crushed beneath your heel.
While not mindlessly or aimlessly destructive (indeed, they find the very idea wasteful and repugnant), Daevryn's chosen understand that life is generally a zero-sum game, a contest in which others must lose for them to triumph. Thera is not full of endless resources, wealth, or acclaim; if rivals are crushed fairly on the path to victory, make no mistake, they are still crushed. Another merchant's house will not be as opulent as yours, another minstrel's work will be less honored, and another soldier's children will grow up as orphans. This is the harsh reality of life. Moreover, it is not enough to best the weakest in the contest -- to win, it is necessary to best the strongest. If victory cannot be attained, Daevryn teaches to lose gracefully, respect those that bested you, and be certain to come out ahead the next time. To do less is unworthy of the proud.
Worshippers find the idea of charity repugnant. There is no pride in possessing a thing if it is yours not because you earned it but because someone merely gave it to you. People should earn their way in the world, rather than becoming slothful and dependent on the altruism of others. Life is a race, and those who fall behind deserve to reap the rewards of that, just as the laurel goes to the victor.
Examples of Daevryn's worshippers might include an athlete with a fierce competitive spirit, an honest merchant who betters his economic station with shrewd dealings, a famed lothario constantly seducing a variety of beautiful women by virtue of his charm and virility, or a hardworking laborer.
Daevryn appreciates concrete goals. It's all well and good to want to eradicate magic from Thera, but it's not happening in your character's lifetime. He also wants to see that you have in mind some things your character can actually discretely do, such as "kill ten mages" or "steal the Emperor's magic pants" or "be the wealthiest man in Thera."
A few of the (many) real-world inspirations for the character or his beliefs... none of which alone are wholly accurate, but all of which capture some aspect of Daevryn:
- Greek/Roman pantheon-style Gods. He's easily capable of Zeus-like arrogance and promiscuity. (This is also one of the many sources for his love/hate relationship with Rayihn, also touched upon more in another thread on this forum.)
- Adam Smith style economics, especially the notion that although individual ambition/greed are seen as bad things, they actually can have a very beneficial effect on a society.
- Vince Lombardi, especially his famous speech on winning and losing; you can easily find it with a web search if you're not familiar.
- Ayn Rand, probably especially Atlas Shrugged and her take on the effects of forced/expected charity. (On the other hand, AR wasn't interested in glorifying competition, and Daevryn obviously has a little different take there.)
- Assorted doping/steroid controversies in professional sports in the last few years. These more as counterexamples -- Daevryn prizes winning, but winning with pride and in a way that others recognize your win as unsullied/valid.
- Valg, trying years ago to convince me to take up a 'King of the Mountain' style religion where followers would be urged to go out and beat the toughest people around, disdaining wins over weak opponents.
- Every parent who made their love for their children conditional on their achievement. My own parents aren't like this, but we all knew the kid whose father was cold to after their little league team played hard but lost, or whose mother only showed affection to if they excelled in school or at piano practice or whatever.
I'm sure I'm forgetting a few, but there's a partial list. I'll edit this post if I remember more.

I'm not going to categorically say it's ruled out for all possible permutations of roleplay, but it's certainly something that should present your prototypical good Daevryn character some difficulty.
I think the religion tends a bit... I won't say lawful evil, but both away from good and a bit away from chaos is fair. It's not totally beyond the pale to be a good-aligned person, and yet feel like giving your stuff to other people simply because their need is greater is a good idea.

I think a lot of the fun of empowerment is discovery, but I'm going to throw this one thing out here because the discovery shouldn't usually be of the kind wherein you realize your whole character concept is totally unworkable.
Daevryn has sphere Earth, and I tend to get a fair crop of Outlandery types.
The thing you have to understand about the character of Daevryn (as established during the Eldritch Consortium / Vault of Nyastren / Prismatic Veil series of quests which introduced him, among other things) is that (short version) he's a guy who was born into poverty, became a miner, and ultimately built a small fortune out of shrewd business dealings, largely with that industry. He adores all of the creature comforts cities produce and money can buy. He's a lot closer to a dwarf's appreciation of earth and stone than your stereotypical Outlander or druid's.
That's not to say you can't be an Outlander or a druid and follow Daevryn. I've had a few followers that made peace with these notions one way or another and managed to roll great with it... but I've also had a few that were like... oh. Well. I guess I'll delete then.
Edited to add: There are other potential Daevryn/Outlander issues, but this is usually the first one to come up. It's not the easiest choice to pick and Daevryn is generally not shy about saying, "You can't have any (or any more) empowerment until I like you."

I have no problem doing Earth empowerments under an identity that isn't Daevryn.

Daevryn character coming up.
Man, seeing this religion makes me miss when I used to really try to roleplay. I had this anti-paladin like...5 years ago? Deveskrius was his name, human AP back when barrier was a mystery to me. Was a Valguarnera follower who sought to spy on Scion for Tribunal in exchange for vindicatorship from Bria, while simultaneously trying to use it to further himself with Valg (since, this reminds me a lot of Valg's old religion, without the honesty part).
Anywho, hope you're not too swamped.
Have you read Ayn Rand's works? I think I've got a great take on a role. Should be fun.

Should give it a shot again.
I know, it's not always the easiest thing to come up with a really compelling role that you'll actually enjoy playing to the hilt, but whenever I look back, those are always my favorite characters, even though they're rarely the toughest ones.
>Valg (since, this reminds me a lot of Valg's old religion, >without the honesty part).
Yeah, I think Valg to some degree was coming at some of the Rand-like ideas from another angle.
>Anywho, hope you're not too swamped.
I've had a pretty good run of empowerees recently but I'm managing to get to most of them (I hope). Note the times I posted elsewhere in this forum that I play; I think other people mistake my posting times for times I may actually be on the mud, to their sorrow.
>Have you read Ayn Rand's works?
I've read the Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, though it's been a few years since either.
Rand's philosophy makes perfect sense to me as a reaction to the rise of communism/socialism/etc., and while I'm pretty sure pure communism falls apart with real people every time because it's naive about human nature, I think to some degree Rand was almost as naive, going in the other direction -- I just don't see everything working out as well with her sort of quasi-libertarian ultra-capitalism brand of things as she does. Basically, I think communism falls down because it naively assumes people won't be lazy, and Randism falls down because it naively assumes that people won't make stupid choices, be unlucky, etc.
But Daevryn'd agree with a lot of it. Not the only or even really main influence on the persona, but, it's in there!
>I think I've got a great take >on a role. Should be fun.
Sounds interesting. I'll look forward to it.
