#340, "Roles and sphere healing"

Hi all,

Just a friendly reminder that I really won't empower you without a role. I might if you guilt me into it but I won't ever especially like you unless you really WOW me with your RP. And even then I'll be wondering...how hard is it to write this awesomeness down in role form? This especially applies to sphere healing healers. This concept is pretty basic to begin with, I need something to go on here. Generic "I'm healer who's sphere healing and I want to heal people" is not ok.

Thanks.

Concerning a sphere Healing priestess, Isadrievien, from last autumn. I feel that this is somewhat on topic, even though Isa did have a role, although a difficult to communicate one. More acts than words, that one. I felt myself at loss in your empowerment interview, the log following. Thoughts and comments would be nice to hear on this one, what you were thinking.

The log:

This woman appears to be human by race, though looking upon her it seems
the blood of something else runs in her veins. She is astonishingly
beautiful, a type of beauty one might consider a gift from the gods.
She is taller than average for a human, with long legs and perfect
proportions. Her hair is a gleaming strawberry blond, hanging in long
curls over her shoulders and down her back, a curtain reaching past
her waist. Wide eyes of the deepest blue are set perfectly in her heart
shaped face. Her eyes are reminiscent of the sea at its most mysterious,
when the sun dances upon its waves and music can be heard within the
lull of its crest. Her flawless skin glows with its own pure light
of health and vitality, though you spot a few freckles scattered over
her cheekbones. This woman's easy smile and bright eyes evoke a sense
of kindness and life about her, a generosity of spirit one might consider
quite simple until they remember the mystery in the depths of her eyes.
Rayihn, a female human, is in perfect health.

Rayihn is using:
<worn on finger> a titanium band set with a large uncut diamond
<worn around neck> (Glowing) a golden necklace with large moonstone pendant
<worn around neck> a pearl necklace
<worn on body> a flowing gown of iridescent sheer blue
<worn on head> a wreathe of purple lotus blossoms
<worn on hands> a handsewn pair of black silk gloves with gold filigree
<worn about waist> a sash of vibrant purple silk
<mainhand wielded> a cerulean walking staff tipped with a glass sphere
<tattooed> (Glowing) the Mark of the Purple Lotus

Rayihn leans back in her throne, running her eyes over you slowly.

You say 'My greetings, Lady.'
You say 'I have come to ask a place among your priestesses.'

Rayihn says 'Oh? Why?'

You say 'To heal those who are in need.'

Rayihn raises an eyebrow.
Rayihn says 'Come, dear, you can be more creative than that...'

You pause to think.
You say 'So that the World would become a better place for us elves to live.'

Rayihn peers at you intently.
Rayihn says 'And healing the needy will make it so?'

You say 'If the needy are deserving it will.'

Rayihn says 'Why?'
Rayihn says 'And how for that matter.'

You say 'When those of Light are well and sheltered, they will grow more powerful and are able to resist those who would do foul things just because they can.'

Rayihn says 'Well, with that general dogma, I would imagine you would be more comfortable in Corrlaan's shrine.'

***Corrlaan! Why did I not choose Corrlaan?***

You say 'And I kinda like the healing itself, how people look at me after I've healed them.'

Rayihn rests her elbow on the arm of her throne, resting her chin in her palm as she studies you.

<100%hp 100%m 100%mv 3502tnl (48.50%) 2 AM wilderness>
Rayihn says 'I suppose. How do you define these needy people?'

You say 'I would heal those who wouldn't use their newly gained power to oppress others.'

Rayihn says 'Well, sure, but how do you tell the difference?'
Rayihn says 'A gold aura?'

You say 'Well.. partly, yes.'
You say 'But there are other things, how they behave and such.'

Rayihn taps a fingertip to her lips.
Rayihn says 'So you'll spend time to get to know them before you commit to healing them?'

You say 'I guess I'd do what I felt was right.'

Rayihn says 'Instinct, hm?'

You say 'Sometimes there is not much time to act.'

Rayihn says 'Very true.'

You say 'So I'd just have to trust my feelings and do what is right.'

Rayihn says 'So to create this better world, you'll do so based only on your instinct...shaping it with whatever feels right at the time?'

You say 'To protect loved ones, that is easy, but with strangers I'd go partly by instinct.'

Rayihn says 'I'll be honest...it seems a little disjointed.'
Rayihn says 'Healing a body's wounds is important and powerful but...not exactly to get what you want.'

You say 'Instinct and knowledge. If he doesn't seem like a bad person I'd help.'
You say 'But if I felt that he'd leave a pile of innocent corpses in his wake after the healing, I'd probably be better off staying my hand.'

Rayihn says 'True...but you have to know that making the world a better place isn't just healing those who won't leave a pile of corpses.'

You say 'True enough.'
You nod.
You pause to think.

Rayihn says 'So I think you need a better plan.'

You perk up your ears and listen.

Rayihn says 'Just being a healer that heals isn't...well, it's not something I really like putting myself with.'

You say 'Why is that?'

Rayihn says 'Well, my dear, it's a little boring...and while a pure intention to keep people alive is nice...it doesn't do much besides that.'
Rayihn says 'You can build up a following perhaps, but you'll always walk a fine line between not knowing if they're just using you or if they actually love you.'
Rayihn says 'And my religion is about much more than just healing the body...'

You say 'I'd wish to heal minds as well. With love and caring, even the darkest of souls can be brought back to light.'

Someone tells you 'Hi!'.
You tell someone 'Hello there.'
Someone tells you 'You busy?'
You tell someone 'I am.'
Someone tells you 'Alright'

Rayihn says 'Well, let's make a plan then.'

You perk up your ears and listen.

Rayihn says 'Something that you're going to do that isn't mindless healing.'
Rayihn says 'Because anyone can say...I like you, I'm going to heal you.'
Rayihn says 'I want you to be better than that.'
Rayihn closes her eyes for a moment and nods at you.
A pleasant warmth makes you feel quite full, perhaps a bit too much.
Rayihn says 'In fact, I demand you be better than that.'
Rayihn says 'I suppose you plan to be an Acolyte?'

You say 'I would.'

Rayihn says 'So? What else can you do? What is there to you that's not healing?'

You pause to think.
You say 'I guess I know a bit or two about growing wine.'

***Isa's role isn't very well suited in terms of talking about herself.
***Boring background of happy childhood with no internal conflict.
***Isolated from the rest of the world, is currently experiencing culture shock in the wide world due to influence of other races.
***Isa hates killing or hurting living beings. This was rather a heavy restriction as it pretty much
***meant "no killing living things without a very good reason", which pretty much prevented killing mobs for gear and solo ranking on living mobs.
***Otherwise the character was an empty table that builds a role based on the experiences of the character.
***How am I supposed to convey that in an interview?

Rayihn blinks once.
Rayihn says 'Well, that's a start.'
Rayihn says 'What else?'

You say 'Well.. I don't really like the undead.'
You say 'Their redemption lies in death.'
You say 'So that they can finally unite with their loved ones waiting on the other side.'

Rayihn says 'Ah, yes, crossing the good old River.'
Rayihn says 'What else? Something personal about you.'

You say 'Well.. I like people, even many of the lesser beings.'

***At least in theory. Isa doesn't have that much experience of other races.

Rayihn says 'Lesser beings? Like...cats? Bugs?'
Rayihn says 'Dwarves?'

You say 'Humans, dwarves and such.'

***I know spouting elf bigotry isn't smart in front of a human goddess with violent temper, but I'm getting desperate here.
***Isa knows nothing about the outside world and is a bit bigoted due to that.

Rayihn says 'Ah, of course.'

You say 'We elves should set a good example to them.'
You say 'So I try to be nice.'

Rayihn glances down at herself briefly.
Rayihn says 'That's nice of you.'

MARCATIS
Life is but a trial, a test for the spirit of all that lives balanced
against the ideal. It is hope seeking true perfection in its truest form; all
rising from those divine sparks of spirit. The form and spark, only seen
through the mists of possibility, is reflected down into the mortal world.
These hopes are faced with the threats of chaos and darkness, all seeking to
corrupt and defile turning a hope of perfection into a twisted shadow not
worthy of the spark imbued.

Death waits down every mortal path, be it at the end today or in hundreds of
years. Death waits patiently, letting the life run what course, what choices
it will. Death need not be feared or hated; simply, it is part the natural
conclusion. What was given will eventually return from whence it came, that
divine spark and all it has learned. The form and spark, joined together at
the beginning must be judged by every act. And at the end comes this final
judgment, where so few-too few are judged worthy.

The scales are weighed for each soul, whether brought early or dying in
their bed, the spark will return to whence it came. Just as death will wait, so
will Marcatis until the natural time has come. Few can remain true enough
to all that is good and orderly to stare into the mirror, to truly be judged.
For those few, Marcatis holds hope. For others with goodness and decency,
or stalwart hearts, there is a sliver of possibility. Some, however, seek to
defy death and grasp unlife, attempting to hoard what is not theirs to keep.
These abominations fear judgment and will find no succor.

Marcatis can be found near several small farming communities surrounded by darkness.

I guess I would say I don't think this empowerment necessarily went as poorly as you thought it did. I think the misunderstanding people have (and I'm quite guilty of this too) is to think that having a role and a sphere means that you will follow that god and everything will be fine. If your role doesn't match what the religion is about, we often assume we can shoehorn it in and make it work and that the immortal in question will go along with it. And I'm not saying that I'm against this in any way. I do understand it's part of the fluid and unique nature of RP and the way we have the empowerment system set up. However, I am going to strongly push any role that does not fit my religion dogma. Sphere healing healer who walks up to Rayihn and tells her they want to heal people...that isn't what Ray's religion is about. Ray isn't Selric, she doesn't believe AT ALL that because you can heal you should. She doesn't believe healing should be free, or thoughtless, or that anyone should ever just heal someone because they can. You also have to consider that her religion is all about tackling big challenges and pushing your natural abilities to be even better. Of course she's going to push you for a deeper meaning. Besides, we have to talk about *something* in an empowerment interview, right?

Of Ailen's interview. You kept trying to tell me that I'd be better off as a Corrlaan follower, and I spent like 45 minutes scrambling and trying to tie it better into your religion.

It's kinda tough, when you think you have a grasp on your role and how it fits in, and the first thing your God/dess tells you is that you should be talking to someone else instead. Instantly puts you on the defensive, and that always makes it more difficult to communicate effectively.

At least, in my own experience.

But then again, ultimately Ailen's interactions with you were some of the more fun ones I had. So I guess it worked out in the end. The first one was frustrating as hell though.

Haha.. I can't imagine anyone seeing Ailen and thinking "Yeah, that looks like fun!" I never worked so hard for any character, what with trying to convince you, Padwei and the Fort leaders that my role made sense, plus all the other Monk issues I was dealing with. Yowch.. never again.

I'll dig up the log and post it when I can.. think it's on the other computer.

You know, this almost tempts me to just roll up an old-fashioned Baer pally, help curb the tide and all. Maybe after Korea...

This response is puzzling to me because:

1) The character in this log gets empowered and

2) It's not like there haven't been another hundred characters empowered by Rayihn.
