I honestly don't understand why people don't like the name. Once you actually say it, it's easy and not like anything else. And to me it sounds perfectly drowish. In any event, I got plenty of flack for it and that helped lessen the fun, sadly.
But not too much. It was a fun ride for the most part. I wanted Enlilth's tattoo, I wanted an Emperor and I wanted a pk capable character after having played two non-pk chars in a row; those were my three goals when I rolled it up and I satisfied them all, so I'm happy.
A few things. First, the full loot comment from Knacnar. The irony here is that I don't think I ever full looted. Ever. Not once. I came close, and certainly tried a few times, but couldn't carry or drop. I mention that because I was full looted - truly full looted -and it's only those people that got the treatment in return. Zri, Zinsizin and one or two others. Which you, Knacnar, know, because when you died I took what, three things? And when you whined about Zins being full'd, I reminded you of that. In fact all the ragers I killed came back to nearly full corpses. But for some reason the 1% overshadows the 99%.
Second, Daev, I don't know why you say what you do, but it's simply not true. I rarely lied about taking things. The few times I did there were specific reasons. And, as the usual experience was for the person to come back to a nearly full corpse, it seems a bit strange you'd make a comment like that. Whatever.
Third, I had a real problem with some of how empire is hardcoded. She was what really should be the standard Imperial. Almost everyone plays without truly roleplaying everything because to do so would make things harder than they want. I've said it before and I say it again, people cut corners to make things easier/powergame/whatever, coming up with rationalizations and justifications to allow them to do something that the character wouldn't. In any event, basic imperial doctrine is to make everyone bloodoath. It's the foundation of the entire cabal. It is the chief reason imperials are supposed to kill. So, great. I go ahead and do that. And then demand/offer the bloodoath. But guess what? The oath can't be sworn to anyone who isn't evil and orderly already. Do you know how stupid and pathetic it looks when someone you just killed says "Ok, fine, I'll do it and join" or something like that, then follows you, and you can't in fact give the oath? It's hardcoded making it impossible. It kinda makes it ridiculous. The laws of the empire command you to make people accept order and darkness, and swear the bloodoath, but you can't do it. I know the rationale, that newbies were screwing up by taking the bloodoath, but I think it's too restrictive now. Perhaps put in an echo that the person about to swear would see, before saying the oath, that doing so will change their alignment and/or ethos and this may have significant and negative effects on the character. Something to warn them at least a bit. But not letting imperials do the very thing they are commanded to do is the wrong resolution.
Fourth, people need to really stop whining about class abilities. In fact when I leveled to 42 Enlilth and I joked that the whining would begin about rot, and someone would invariably complain that all I do is rot and run, never fight, etc. Sure enough, two days later, that's exactly what somone said. Later, a prominent character, a cabal leader, said that using rot was cheap and somehow lesser than using other class abilities, and that he was going to change how he fought because of it, bringing more people, taking more items, etc. People who complain about rot, and more specifically people who decry a shaman that uses rot, are morons, plain and simple. Rot, like bash, like neuro, like frightful fiend, like bearcharge, like any other class ability, is just that, something a character gets and that everyone knows they get. Complaining about someone using it is absurd. What's more, people who complain about someone using are also ill informed players. Rot does more than simply reduce constitution, possibly killing you. It has significant other effects that make it a key power for a shaman. So next time you want to whine about a shaman who uses it for a "cheap" kill, don't. Like you don't complain about entwine or quicksand or the hunt or whatever.
Fifth, I absolutely loved the imperial politics. I knew the plots against me both before and after becoming Empress. I loved spending time talking to people instead of hunting sometimes. It's a unique part of the Empire cabal and I wanted to drink it up. A couple people think they fooled me, but didn't, and a couple people did fool me but didn't take advantage of it. For the most part she didn't trust anyone, except Damgril, though with the limitation that she knew she would be loyal only so long as Mel was both able to keep her in power as high priestess, and in good standing with Enlilth. Adarmar turned out to be the only real challenge for Empress at the end, and for whatever reasons Jeikdurr and Jazon kept their words to Mel. They can explain why if they want, I'd be interested to know.
Sixth, Enlilth man, good times. Thanks for the empowerment and the talks. Shame we never did get around to that chain damnation or chain blindness or something. That would be cool for a shaman. You can groom your next one. I'm glad you enjoyed the logs I sent (I'll probably get around to posting logs for the rest of you, don't worry), I certainly enjoyed starring in them. I heartily recommend playing an Enlilth character to everyone out there. It's a good experience. Was there anything else you thought I could/should have done? Anything about the religion I flubbed? Would love to hear any other feedback.
Obviously I met and dealt with a lot of people, so I'll just respond to any who post. I logged most of my kills and deaths, so give me some time and I'll get around to posting some. If you have a specific request though, let me know.
Lastly, I deleted because frankly I just got bored. 80% of my deaths came because sanctuary fell at the wrong moment. Seriously. It was so frustrating. 15% came from the same reason most of my characters die: I stay too long and keep fighting when I shouldn't. It's fun, but it gets me killed when I otherwise wouldn't. Oh well. The last 5% were the few times I simply got beat, even when I didn't think there was a chance I'd get beat. Kudos to those few. In the end though, once I got Emperor powers and my full set of eq (which I held onto for about 125 hours I think), I didn't feel like there was any single person I couldn't beat and no one really inspired any fear. One of the few I was looking forward to was Nurok who had killed me when we were younger but who stopped showing up just as I had everything in line. Oh well. Anyway, at that point I'd gone most places, got the eq I wanted, killed virtually everyone, and just didn't fancy another three or four hundred hours of lather, rinse, repeat. I know there would have been a few interesting things along the way, but I was no longer feeling that real excitement and anticipation every time I logged on. Now it was more tedium and fun combined. That's the sign a char is over for me.
And so it is. Thanks for the fun.
Graatch
ps People thought I was Knacnar. People thought I was Russian. People thought I was Arlettien. Over the course of the character I counted 14 different times people said to me (on irc or email and once actually in character) that "graatch is X", and not Melememelem. Some of course did think I was Mem. As enlilth mentioned, she was a drow imperial shaman. Arrogant and abrasive and well spoken (ha!) is prototypical. Evidently I did it well...

I personally saw it a few times in your last week of play; I saw your enemies talking about similar situations several more times.
I didn't care enough to investgiate more closely so it's possible they were lying or mistaken, but based on having seen it a few times that I couldn't see any real reason for, I'm going to go with, I believe them over you.

It's not worth my digging in our logs to try to prove or disprove it either way; I can certainly stand by "this is what a number of your enemies that surprised me were saying about you", but then, what a character's enemies say about them is almost never entirely accurate and fair, and to what degree it is or isn't is almost always hard to gauge.

Thanks. I'm glad that came through as that was exactly what I was trying to do. You were competent and solid every time we went and did something, be it pk'ing, item gathering (and you were great at that by the way, in the sense that unlike most others you would instigate and not merely wait for me or someone else to suggest gathering them) or exploring/eq gathering.

Once upon a time you could oath anyone, but in practice, pretty much only genuine super newbies on their first character would take the oath. Everyone else knew that if they were really beat, it was a smarter move for them to delete.

to make them actual penalties instead of a drawn out delete.
The double wrath vuln alone is enough drawback for align change in my book, do you realize how many wrath weapons are out there? Throw on top of that perhaps make everything cost 2 times as much for you (merchants find you untrustworthy) and maybe penalize the use of npc healers. That in and of itself represents a pretty big mechanical disadvantage that should overcome any power gaming reason to switch aligns. Of course priests should lose empowerment still and have to get it back.
Then you can actually have fortress trying to turn people good Empire trying to turn people evil eh nobody cares about ethos but it really should be more fluid too even though there are really no draw backs for it now.
There is two sides to cf, converting and killing and as we grow smaller I think it is more of the convererts who have left (since they can't actually ever achieve their goals) then the killers.

I know what happens to Anathema in relation to centurions and vengeance. I also know that the rules are a bit different. I also watched Kjrorh run around unmolested by Imperials constantly. I watched Ahtieli choose to attack my characters instead of Kjrorh when both were in the same room fighting. Nobody does anything about Anathema for the most part, some die out quick, the others just learn to escape easily.

I liked dreg and was upset when you deleted. We would have had a lot of fun and it's possible I would have tossed adarmar and made you war master. Nothing's better than having cow-talk from a sect leader.
Good times.

Good shaman though for me you always was just a pale shadow of Nererial. In PK. Might be mistaken surely as it's only from what I witnessed myself. But you syrely was realy well RPed. Just one note. You sure can talk about taking corners and what not but your role was the role of extreme Imperial dogma resulting in stupid edicts and politics. While that's cool role to play and absolutly acceptable in CF it's rather unrealistic. In reality all people are trying to adapt to curcumstances or life beats them and beats them hard. That's to question about you becoming Empress. Sure there is a chance that those two just decided that you are a beaten horse and so it's safe to give their votes to you to win the place but I think they just rewarded your RP breaking their own at the same time. I personaly hardly can imagine people wishing such Empress like you unless they are some kind of masohists

In response to Reply #23

I loved the character, and the name. First time I saw it, I said it out loud and just thought, "the cheeky bitch!" It was one of my favorite Drow names. All my life I heard that you wouldn't say a word to anyone that wasn't simply demanding the blood oath, but that turned out to be false. I was looking forward to interacting some more.
My only complaint, and this isn't a complaint about the character but about how the Empire is set up, is our first encounter. I really don't think your presence was nesscessary. I was thinking, okay, there's no way Nos can't know that I know that she's there and I was hoping she'd come talk with me, but instead you get called in and you both rolled over me. The whole situation just left me feeling like, this is what I get for hoping to RP with Empire instead of playing it safe and running away or attacking. Especially after I tried to open some kind of dialogue afterwards and got the blood oath treatment, but then you came back with an opportunity to see past that and I found what I had expected, a really cool character. I know it's a pk game too, but without rp, there's no way I'd be playing a mud over some other game and you're right, the way it's set up, Empire has no purpose other than to slaughter it's enemies. It kind of kills RP for Imperials outside of Empire, which leads to resentment. The same could be said for Marans, but they get called on by other people to be heroes which opens up avenues of RP. I think the penalties for taking the Blood Oath should be more role playing penalties than mechanic penalties. Tack the title, subjugated by the Empire onto someone's character and see how much respect they get. It will be a lot harder, and in some cases impossible, to accomplish things if everyone looks down on you. I would like there to be mechanical penalties as well, but just not as harsh as it was.
Anyway, enough rambling, awesome job.

I did loot you the last time I killed you because I logged in to see a naked Zri who said he just got ganked and full looted, and had been three or four times already, I felt this was stupid.
You never killed me btw, we we ended up being 3-0 in my favor
Now your gang killed me several times, but you never got the killing blow. This made me happy. I couldn't stand listening to your #### talking after you died or we had a good fight, it literally made me hate your character. So good job, thats usually what you go for and the reason everyone hates you.

The Good
I think you played an imperial to perfection. I know some people (myself included) initialy thought of you as a no rp murder anythign that moves char but I very quickley realized that you were totally willing to take the drawbacks that come with being allies of only the empire and that got a huge thumbs up from me. I also have to admit that as a shaman you did the best against me then a shaman has ever done against any of my conjies, actually forcing me to retreat and making it clear I couldn't archon vs you was a first for me facing shaman. Of course any other pair of servitors pretty much tore your face off but still the fact that you were a dark elf and tanking my archon and actually putting me on the defensive was amazing you really utilized the entirety of your skill set.
I also think you did a good job of hunting instead of just being a russian empire who does nothing but gather cabal items and squat on them. Sure you did that but you also walked alone and would catch people off the beaten paths.
The Bad I kind of had you pegged as a full looter after you walked in and did a get all corpse on zin after I killed him. Then I died to the four of you in imperial lands and I think lost only one or two pieces of gear and I changed that impresion. But the vitriolic attitude is just a habbit of poor players in general and if a player only interacts with you briefly that is what they are going to take away and you just have this tendency with all your characters to rub people the wrong way. It just so happens that this was a character build where that made sense. You should really try and do a character that isn't so abrasive and it is like dregthul said below, you have a hook to your characters and you just overuse it.

I was very surprised when you were voted in as Emperor. Despite my restricted POV I could tell this was a gutsy, cocky, hardass character - and that kind of character isn't the non-threatening "team evil" type who normally gets the votes to become the Emperor. I don't know how you did it but well done
But you should have stuck it out!

I suspect it is the same players complaining about rot as were complaining about rot when I played Nererial. For some of them, it was the one chink in their armor and they still didn't cover it, then complained when I used that.
I did notice that you didn't take the easiest route, in terms of how you could have made the bandwagon situation, and I think the game was better for it.

I thought you were an outstanding character. I've had my own hand in dark elf Empire in the past, and I have to say, you were far more qualified in that department.
Screw all those naysayers. Notwithstanding the lame name (yes, it is a lame name if you can't say in 5 times without screwing up, or even 3 times), you were an outstanding opponent and just an overall figure to look up to for anyone playing or wanting to play a dark elf. The full loots I heard about were somewhat annoying, but no one likes to be full looted - it's just the way the game has evolved recently.
I'm just surprised you didn't die more by the way you would recall so often.

Thanks. And I think you were/are a good commander and villager. I'm disappointed that it's now ok for village applicants to use town healers to cure everything and anything, I think it's flat out wrong, but that's not you, that's the battle cabal staff, so I don't blame you. Your build was frustrating as you could reliably lag me and hit with deathblows, so I rarely had time to land the maledictions necessary to win. Shaman 101 is wearing down the enemy, so of course I would recall a lot. Like many villagers you would fight primarily on eastern road or nearby, so I would recall, heal up and return. Hit and run is shaman bread and butter. Once you were commander and had poultice that just make it even harder. Very strong character. And I doubt you'll make that mistake in balator again any time soon!

Because right now, as a Oath to Tahren. You can use any healer, which in some ways thats good, cure plague and blind. But you can also spam heal or refresh. And no where does it say you can't, or shouldn't.
I'm probably guilty of spamming refresh on one of my more recent village apps, but really. I'm impatient =D

I'm not sure what you are asking here. Why do I persist in saying it? Because it's true? I have log after log after log of battle applicants getting plagued and poisoned and so forth and then going to a town healer and curing it. Fact. Not once. Not twice. Not three times. Many. And not one character. Not two. Many.
So really the question is whether you and the rest of the battle staff are that ignorant of what's going on, or whether by your explicit or tacit approval you are fine with it going on.
I merely point out the fact of it being common. Do with it as you wish. Others have confirmed it so you don't even need to simply take my word for it, though of course you should.

Healers are basically the only way you can get a decent amount of commerce XP at a decent speed. You can run around and barter for junk and then barter that junk for more junk until you finally lose your money in it (which makes no sense really). But even then that's not the same as popping 20 owlbear feathers for heals or pearls, garnets, sapphires and emeralds, and troll goodies for refreshes.
But I personally think the battle applicant process is really screwed up right now. I've never liked the "Village Applicant" tag from the get go. But I also don't like how all the religions seem pigeonholed for one single cabal. It ends up bleeding the religion into cabal dogma and that annoys me too. Ends up any original take on anything gets viewed the same way we look at physically deformed people.
If Hammersong is going to say he doesn't approve of the healer, and the other imms will say the same thing, then why is it even there? I mean, there's a whole village sect based on healing, why not make it one of those? Put one outside the village. Hell, spread them around. Put one in the glauruk spawning ground, one on the Udgaard plains, one in the Oryx Steppes, ect. You pay for a poultice and a bandage and some kind of refresh juice that all puts timers on you like the defender powers. There, problem solved.

Thanks. You too. One of the best ways to fight a shaman is to make him bleed so he doesn't regen mana. Your spear obviously did that and made our fights interesting. I, the player, of course knew you would never swear the bloodoath, but the character never stopped believing that it would happen or you (and everyone else) would die off. She was a fanatical shaman of the Empire. Go figure.

For the most part I liked this character and I was "ok" with you becoming Empress. The funny thing is...you got lucky on that one with the gun being jumped. Anyway...you were tough and an ok ally. You were a horrible foe though and I thought that not even having been against you. The no group with anyone other than oaths thing is fine and dandy from an RP perspective, but a great way to watch your Empire dwindle and die. Anyway, good luck with whatever you choose to do next.

>I would have at least extended the grouping restriction to >Tribunals.
The tribunals were within the restriction like anyone else. Or are you trying to say you would extend an exception to the restriction, allowing imperials to travel with tribunals (without killing them first, as I've noted was the actual policy)?
The idea being a unaligned person is "on the >fence", so you shouldn't group with them until they come down >one way or the other: either as an oath or as a member of an >enemy cabal. But a Tribunal has already come down off the >fence, so to speak, and joined a cabal that the Empire views >as fulfilling a useful purpose. With a Tribunal there's no >lurking suspicion in the back of the Imperial's mind that the >guy is lying to him when he says he'll eventually take the >Oath. You know the Tribunal never is, so you know you're not >being deceived (in that particular way).
That makes no sense, if I understand it correctly. To an imperial there are two kinds of people, those who have sworn the bloodoath and those that haven't. Plain and simple. That's what the various laws and questions in the palace all say. Tribunals are no different from anyone else, or any other cabal. A lawful fortress paladin is just as orderly as a tribunal, and is not on any fence, but we don't travel with them do we? An evil scion is just as dark as an imperial but we don't travel with them, do we? Tribunals are allowed to do their job if the Emperor decides not to keep his scales at the palace, but that doesn't make anyone in that cabal any less required to swear the oath than anyone else.

This.
>That makes no sense, if I understand it correctly. To an >imperial there are two kinds of people, those who have sworn >the bloodoath and those that haven't. Plain and simple.
I never looked at it that way. The Tribunal was viewed as being subordinate to the Empire, but allowed to exist as a separate entity *for the time being* until the rest of Thera had been subdued. Then the Tribunal would be dismantled and replaced by an Imperial equivalent.
So, for the time being, the Tribunal is an ally. Except the good-aligned ones, who are obviously never going to submit to Imperial rule.
A guy who is uncaballed, though, is in an undetermined state, and is remaining there intentionally by his refusal to take the oath.
If you think of the Empire as Nazi Germany, then the Tribunal would be like Italy. Eventually, had the axis powers won the war, I would expect Germany to have dismantled the Italian govt. and made it a territory of a larger Nazi empire. But, for the time being, they had similar ideology and were working together against the allied powers.

Not sure how I got lucky or what gun was jumped? The votes were all in, the only thing that happened was that Enlilth sped up the result.
How was I a horrible foe?
As for the no grouping with those that aren't sworn to the Empire, that's not entirely true, and I wish you would be more honest or accurate. The rule was that you couldn't group with someone who has not sworn the bloodoath *unless* you kill them first and offer the bloodoath. Then you were allowed to travel with them to show them the upside of being a citizen, having just taught them the downside of not. And you say it's fine and dandy from an rp perspective, but then your statement about an empire dwindling is really ooc. Because that's the player knowing that other players roll up their chars and aren't going to just switch. The character though doesn't know that. An imperial thinks that anyone and everyone can and should swear the bloodoath and join the empire. It's what every imperial wants and believes, and in fact is sworn to do so not only by an oath, but a mystical and divinely powered oath of great power, as daev has mentioned several times in the recent past. All Mel did was actually be an imperial.
Good luck with Jazon, I hope you have fun with assassinate. I know you were working on it and I have personal experience with that of course, so I know what you're going through. Don't get discouraged if you hit a bad streak. You can power through it.

I completely understood the policy and from an RP perspective it was perfect Empire RP. SO...that is good. From a game mechanics standpoint it makes life very tough when you already have lots of enemies. OOC bleeds into IC I don't care what anyone says. I like a good challenge personally and after your "policy" I just stopped learning with others for the most part unless I was a few k away from it. As for all the Empire wants it...in some ways that is true, but you also have to remember that each Sect has its own goals. The Divine Sect sure...they probably want that. The Shadow Sect...well, they want it, but they also want what they want and thats what they are going to go for...first. I walked the party line and Jazon is the kind of character that will attack, loot from, or whatever just about anyone because he is greedy. At the same point, I tend to be too nice at times with people things, but ah, thats my choice.
As for the gun being jumped. If that is the way voting works...then the language on casting your votes needs to be changed. When it says you can cast or change your vote up to this time..then that means I should be able to change my vote up until that time. I was going to change mine and that is all that needs to be said. It came down as it did though and so thats ok. Like I said, I was OK with you being Empress, thought you would do a fine job, but of course you deleted not long after so we never really saw. Oh well..have fun with the next.

From any objective standard, this character was a big success. Emperor and one of the most PK successful characters of their time.
The thing to me that's a little sad to me is that, watching the reactions of people Mel killed, what they seemed to get out of the experience was not "I just got beat by one of the toughest characters in the game" but more "I got killed, the Emperor looted a bunch of my things, and then told really bad, transparent lies about it."
To me, stereotypically, the Emperor should be more the kind of guy who takes your #### and is all "Yeah, I took your ####. I'm tougher than you and my Empire's going to keep whipping you. What are you going to do about it?", and I just couldn't find anything in this character's role that explained to me the strange combination of random kleptomania and obvious lies. That'd have been a hell of an original idea and perhaps a kind of parody of the super-touchiness about looting we often see now if I was sure it was on purpose but as-is it was just really puzzling to me. I got the impression that most of the people on the receiving end (I didn't personally interact with this character) had the same puzzlement.

Dumbest name ever! There I said it.
Once I forced myself to get over this while you were 20 something after heavy snoopage, I really liked this character. I found myself telling other people... take away the stupid name and this dude's solid. I already posted how I thought you sucked for deleting below somewhere. Sorry about the four different versions of the title before I found one I thought was cool. Your roleplay style pretty much gives away the player, however, this syle fits empire drow shaman perfectly. I'd like to say I'm really looking forward to whatever you do next, but it probably won't be my religion or cabal, and I'll probably hate you and give you syphilils and plague you repeatedly.
That's par for the course though ain't it? Hope I continue you seeing you in the game. I thoroughly enjoyed the logs. -- Try an Enlilth follower today! Enlilth, now with 40% more chewey caramel in every bite. --

It's not as bad as some. But it just sounds really dumb. What's worse, it's on a dark-elf, which should have a very different style of name. On a gnome it wouldn't be as horrible. But Melemelem just sounds very silly. It's also too close to the word "melee" for comfort. When I see it, I see "Melee me, melee me" Probably not actually what he intended, but on top of the general stupidness it just smacks of being a lame gimmic name.
