#68608, "On Droghnund"
In response to Reply #0
|
I had mixed feelings about Droghnund. Call me stupid (or someone else will) but I have no idea who the hell played this character. I had one or two names in the back of my head, but both eventually scratched themselves out by doing one thing or by not doing something else. I'm curious what everyone else knew that I didn't, and how by any IC method they figured it out.
My thoughts on this character are mixed, as I said. On the one hand, I really appreciated an evil rager being played as an evil rager and not as an 'evil to everyone else' rager. This was, from my limited observation, the best alignment-RP I've seen in years across the board. Think about it guys, he would have had an easier life not being such an evil bastard. There's a reason that evil is evil. And it's not for the evil_only flagged fear. That was the magnifiscent part of Droghnund to me.
The ####ty part of this character to me was that he'd make players' lives difficult as much as characters'. I had allies and enemies alike complain to me about this guy. When someone you hate with a passion can tell you, who they hate with a passion, that they'd rather sleep with you than talk to your drillmaster, that says something. I also took some issues with what came off to me as hypocrisy. Being drillmaster to me always meant leading by example and backing every word with action. I give you an 85% in that category from our time together. For a rager, I wouldn't complain. I just expected more from my leader.
The fighting though, wow. I still to this day don't know how you pulled off some of the #### that you did. It was sort of lame to me that you would say things like "If you think that was good, watch this" because it felt like you were talking to me, the player. That said, I always did get impressed by the next move or two. THAT said, I think you shouldn't have been giving other people #### for not sharing strategies with the village. Are you kidding me? It's not like you were out there mentoring anyone, that I knew about. Someone else would have probably defended you if you were, when everyone was talking about hating you.
About that whole disrespect thing that we discussed IC, I have to assure you that it was totally IC and that I still half expected as a player to be risking my place in the cabal by doing it. If I were you, I could have found a way to justify booting me for it and at the same time I could have found 99 ways not to. Thanks for taking one of the 99 ways.
Overall, I felt good about this character. Those little things I mentioned might help you to make a more interactive character next time, or might not. Take my commentary as you will, I'm just a guy.
Good luck with your next character; I hope it's as enjoyable for you as this one, or more. -PP

Having interacted with you with two villagers and one foe. There is not one good thing I can say about you.
Had you been less of a duchebag from a foe prospective I would have enjoyed fighting you, instead I did everything I could to avoid even speaking to you.
It also carried over to other villagers. You were the type of character who made me not want to play, and we were on the same team. I have played with a lot of chars that I have not gotten along with in char. I have played with a lot of people I just did not like in char. I have played with a lot of people who have disgusted me in char. I have never, untill you, played with someone who did all three so far as to make me hate the player behind the chararcter. You made me not want to play this game at all, because I would have to deal with you as a friend or a foe. It got to the point where I rolled up another character to play that would never have to deal with you ever. Whats even worse is that the one single solitary time that the new char crossed paths with you, you acted like a cock hole again. Which was completely uncalled for and unprovoked.
I am sorry that you get pleasure out of playing like that. I hope one day you realize how much of a duchebag you are. And I hope if you happen to decide to roll up a level sitting thief the acts the SAME WAY that char changes in retrospect of this because it shines though real hard.
Cheers

I hesitated for quite some time giving it, don't remember why since I know I thought your RP to be excelent and I knew you were deadly. Might have been that you where lvl 25ish and had fully Spiked and humansunderer... Just gave me the itches. heh
You had some kickass RP, kickass char overall. But, the player really made me feel strange...
IC I supported Fjarns decision and he couldn't have done any other choice knowing that the rest of us were on our last con. ^^
But, really dude, you try playing a goodie goodie and stay in the goodie goodie role at all times. An acolyte bent on help EVERYONE. Think that would give you some perspective. heh
Keep the cool chars comming though, just skip the assynes.

I liked Droghnund a lot. I wasn't on the receiving side, so I can't comment that "ignore" stuff, but I can imagine how frustrating it can be when you plan to whine at someone and he just ignores you. Hah! You had some flaws but we all have them. Maybe sometimes you were hot tempered but often you were also right. I have one suggestion to anyone, pay more attention to actions and less of it to words.
We may have many ST explorers or "stellar roleplayers" in the Village who are very polite, talk in scottish accent and don't use "ignore" command, but they aren't around when things become rough. Or they die several times per day and delete in a week. And only a few villagers form the spine of the Village, who are really fighting the war, not only for yourself but for the whole cabal. And you were one. You gained my respect and I tried my best to help you with anything, knowing how rough things were for you in the hero range. You also were a villager with whom I could walk around together and don't feel like Jaragh among orphans . It is good when your allies know what to do.
P.S. I see how that "weekly reports" thing could annoy people and though I can't say that I like the procedure itself, the underlying idea was good and I supported it.

I know quiet a few people got a bad flavor from you, but the times you kicked me in the ass were quite enjoyable RP wise...I'd assume maybe his ignore started as a Undersider loathing all therans? Assuming a bad thing though...What you did to my corpse those few times Did remind me of what a necromancer would do, and your knowledge of battle tactics was darn good. Heck my angels beat on most anyone...

In response to Reply #0

I guess this will be a mixed/neutral goodbye from ol' Fjarn.
I enjoyed our interactions early on, and saw a fire in your character that I hadn't seen in the other applicants I'd talked to at the time. Your roleplay was impeccable, and immensely entertaining. I had you pegged as my Drillmaster before the Rites started, on the off chance that Fjarn was selected to lead the village. It was a huge gamble, and I knew that would irk some of the older heros, but it seemed in the best interest of the village to have long-term leadership. And Fjarn knew (IC) that he'd made the right choice when, before the blood had dried in the circle, his enemies were already complaining about his selection. Fjarn chose Droghnund because he was a brutal, unforgiving, bloody fearmonger who rained death upon his foes and danced in their skin afterward.
From a player perspective.... well, I can only thank my ignorance, I suppose. I don't know anything about who plays what and all that. And frankly, I don't care. I sensed that you'd be hard to reign in to Fjarn's expectations of how villagers should act during and after combat, but I could only trust that my Imms would watch and give me a heads up if you broke those orders. Turns out, they don't give the Commander "snoop". As a player, I'm 50-50 on believing that you got away with stuff that I would have uninducted you for. And of course, I never personally saw the ignore abuse. But, enough people have complained that I think I can say it really was an abuse of the command. This is a roleplaying game, and one-sided interactions are not appropriate. It ranks up there with disarm/loot/logoff, and dropping link to avoid pk..
Anyway, enough of that. Overall, I enjoyed Droghnund's character as Drillmaster. You were hard on your enemies, and sometimes even harder on the men you watched over. You were the bad cop to Fjarn's good cop; the hardass to Fjarn's friendly. We made a good team. I supported your decisions, and when you went out of bounds, I think Fjarn managed to smooth things over without completely undermining you as second in command. But again, that's why Droghnund was a good Drillmaster in Fjarn's eyes: you rode the fine edge of "just enough" and "too much". And, you took the initiative to impose your Drillmasteryness in your own way, which I very much appreciated.
I wish we'd had the chance to return to your home to cleanse some mages. I wish I'd had another chance to hand everyone a beer and pass you some tea. Most of all, though, I selfishly wish you'd done more to earn respect as a player from friends and foes. As anyone who has had leadership responsibilities can attest, the decisions and actions of the people on your team reflect on you. For good, or for ill.

It was my decision, which was made in-character based on the character Fjarn and the character Droghnund, their interactions, and the character Fjarn's experience prior to ever entering the adventuring world of Thera. That's roleplay, and I will absolutely defend the character Droghnund that the character Fjarn chose, and the role-based reasons behind that selection.
However, I absolutely do not and will not defend or make excuses for player actions that are abusive, rolebreaking, or in poor taste toward the gaming community as a whole. In that regard, and knowing what I know now, yes, as a player I regret the decision.

I didn't like Droghnund's abuse at all. It was quite childish, and given who the player is (who is usually absurdly obnoxious and arrogant), it fit into his profile like a leather glove.
That being said, the few times we exchanged words, his rp was dead on. I wasn't surprised that he became Drillmaster, and in fact, I thought that if he didn't abuse the ignore command, he would've easily became commander.

While it appears the written role of this character was exceptional, from interactions with the character it seemed incredibly contrived and a classic exampled of "roleplaying at" as opposed to "roleplaying with" others.
When I killed you at the Rift as Chuhanrun (with the out of range help of Grecken and Praeto) I thought your begging for your admittedly-awesome equipment was shameful and the only reason I returned anything was because I was embarrassed for you. You ganking me with another rager/applicant and full-looting me afterwards was at least refreshing because it was a break from the condescending latte-sipping attitude I saw from the rest of the character's life.
Hopefully you deleted because you realize you're capable of better.

You might be amused to know that the first time I killed you I was wielding an av14 non-limited weapon. That made me chuckle a little, considering the stuff you were decked out in. Also enjoyed the "wtf?" reaction I got when you returned and figured out I hadn't looted anything.
We had some good fights, I think. Clearly dirt kick is overpowered. Har! I felt bad for you that last time in Arboria but...role-play and all that jazz. If I recall, I didn't find you there via locate mark; I was there for the same reason you probably were.

To me the title of drillmaster means a lot as one my villagers back in the day was around when that title was first given out, along with General and Captain. I was able to watch you from three perspectives none of which really liked your character greatly but I did have a great deal of respect for you. Your knowledge of tact and skill were almost astounding at times. Although I may not have agreed with many of the choices you made, I sure as hell liked that you took your own approach to directing the village and all the complaining wasn't a bad thing. I do regret that I never got to face you with my newest char but maybe you will have another incarnation before mine dies off, so I will save more words for another time and simply say good luck with your next.

I really wanted to like this character man. You are one of the best players of this game on the mechanics/concept side, but your attitude always shines through. I don't know when I realized who the player was, but it was definitely shortly after interacting with you. Whether it was when I saw you decked in full Dern and a set a hero duergar would envy at level 22 (was the word on the street correct...did you trade Igbah back his gear for that set?) or the first time my mage interacted with you, or the first time you told me what you wanted as Drillmaster.
Good luck with your next man, but take a step back. Play something completely different from your normal style, maybe even make him/her mute. I think it could be good for you.
GLWYN.

This character is a prime example of how Ignore can be abused in a childish manner, and turned into a tool for purposely frustrating opponents. It's one thing to taunt IC, it's another to abuse ooc mechanics to try and goad people.
It easily overshadowed anything praisable, from my perspective. There should be a way for the imms to remove the ignore command from characters who abuse it on this scale. Just don't do it again dude, and we'll ignore the fact you knew it was wrong and did it anyway. That's all I want to say on the subject.

Here's how most of our interactions went. And I'm not kidding, this was nearly all the times we talked (okay, he talked) that he did this. Under these circumstances, I was trying to pin him with an ally and taking way too much damage from his wrathing swords and spiked armor set. So I'd be landing plague and then running so he couldn't follow.

Having previously seen precisely 0% of Droghnund's life, I feel sure I know who the player is just from this log. That's sad and not indicative of good RP.
I'll start an internal discussion of the best ways to discourage ignore abuse. The command has legitimate uses, but letting a huge tool be an even huger tool to people they could be RPing with isn't one of them.

What about some sort of timer, where you can't "ignore" anyone if you have sent a tell/reply to them in the past couple of ticks? As per usual, I have no idea how this would be coded, but that allows me to ignore someone -immediately- if I don't want to hear them or, if I talk to them, I have to wait a couple ticks and then can still have the ignorination.
