He does not say it, nor dwell upon it, but there is always an immense rush of gratification in sinking his blades into a dark soul, seeing the Light sear the blackness within, feeling his blood pump with righteous wrath, stabbing and relishing the pained shuddering of one who deserved the most absolute of punishment a mortal can deliver - death.
Underneath the gentlemanly, courteous, even friendly and caring exterior lies a heart that is especially bloodthirsty to enemies.
Indeed his tenacity in the aspect of hunting evil is incredible, made even more immense by his dedication to the Soul of the Mountain, which not only made him much more durable, but also made him mentally more focused on the War.
He feels particularly flushed during a battle he once had with Jhishesh,
when he bled her with a hurled dagger to the torso, a severed artery, a slashed hamstring as well as a twist in a stab wound. He then stunned her with his bare hands, and watched the horrific blood loss turn her already ashen dark-dwarven skin pallid and lifeless. To his dismay, he enjoyed every moment of it, and felt a rush of satisfaction when he drove his dagger up her ribs, until her body shuddered, and her head lolled over, and she collapsed in a heap on the ground, dead. He fancied seeing her evil bleed out, seared by the righteous anger of the Light.
He does not usually divest his enemy's corpses of all its equipment out of spite, however, he just takes what he needs, though he knows that would damage them even further, he is just not in the habit of ruining an enemy's mood and recovery by taking everything. He thinks that is just a purely spiteful behaviour, and somehow avoids it, on that odd whim. He doesn't like hearing a frustrated, fully-looted enemy rant and rave. He prefers the mutual understanding and agreement of their enmity, and is to some extent even nice to his enemies, after they're dead of course.

Subject: On the Jaded Elsworth and the Law Added Sun Sep 12 04:01:53 2004 at level 51: Elsworth has a special hatred for Imperials, because they so resemble his old guardian, with their systematic, so-called orderly way of climbing up the power ladders, and absolute cruelty under the mask of lawfulness.
Elsworth himself sees Law and Order as an ideal, and advocates it only under the circumstances when all under the Theran sky are goodly, and innocent. While evil still walks the land, the law is ready to be manipulated, and he would not hesitate to break Tribunal law to stab foul hearts. However, he usually keeps clear of being discovered, and if suspected, he lies to the Tribunal - he has absolutely no respect for laws which protect evil within the walls of cities.
Though when the Tribunal is goodly, as was the case once with Thalenor, he tends to give himself up to punishment and execution, for he not only wishes no conflict with them, he is also respectful of the pure, goodly lawmen. Therefore it is usually a conflict within himself whether to turn himself in or not, much as he hates to let himself die just for striking a dark soul who deserved death.
<130/1051hp 594/627m 931/931mv 19166tnl indoor civilized 1 PM> role read 3 Subject: On the Underhanded Elsworth Added Sun Sep 12 04:00:50 2004 at level 51: Elsworth does not believe in the classic type of honour embraced by the village or seekers of the clarion. He would do anything to take down an enemy, but neither would he shy away from difficult odds. His way is purely pragmatic, if there is a possibility of striking down one given to foulness, he would do it, even if it involved using superior numbers. He is not in the habit of lying to lure enemies into traps, however, as that would only damage his credibility, and would not be effective in the long term. He speaks politely to his enemies, and lets his blades do the speaking when he physically meets them. There is little point, he concluded, in being angry and hurling obscenities at one's enemies, because that only serves to enhance their rage and make them more aware of one's desire to take revenge. The way of the dagger is silent, and Elsworth is mild and gentle enough, but ruthless when the moment avails him of an opportunity. Many warriors see daggers as sneaky, underhanded weapons, and Elsworth is no exception. He does prefer being sneaky and underhanded to his enemies, all the better to slay them with. The strikes of the dagger have become very familiar to him, the hurl, artery, return for the hamstring, poison, let them bleed in terrible agony, all are done with a surgical precision.
Though Elsworth likes to be able to slay his enemies, he finds potions and such too troublesome to use, and only uses those which come into his hands from friends, or those easiest to gather. The Enigma of the Thirteen proves
very useful to users of potions and such, he uses it mainly for recalling out of battle, which has frustrated many imperials over-confident in the abilities of their centurions. He does not particularly care for his clothing either, with the zeal of the Maran, his warcry and his berserk rage to supply the strength he needs to strike his enemies down. The Orb comes before equipment, as do the Codex and Scepter, as does the well-being of friends, as do the deaths of enemies.
He would even make use of another evil person, and facilitate a struggle between them, for he feels either way both foul ones suffer, and all the better if both die. He once took the blows at the Imperial inner guards so as to allow Gelcoa, a duergar battlerager, to kill Lorgacin. Watching the two hack at each other gave him a grim satisfaction, if only he could induce evil to self-destruction more often!
Indeed he may not be the purest epitome of goodness, for he would use evil to destroy evil with absolutely no self-remorse. If he had a say, he would encourage nightgaunts to be used by conjurers of the Fortress against their enemies when necessary, though he understands that all precautions must be taken to ensure that the evil nightgaunt is properly enslaved, to the extent that it becomes a mere tool. He does have a pretty unforgiving attitude to
those of the dark. Though ostensibly he says it is better to convert a dark heart, he doesn't believe it works often. The best way is to wipe them all out.

He feels a resilience within his body now, and knows that he will retain his health through many deaths. The nature of his leadership is kindly, leading by love and example rather than through brute force or harsh commands. He has a policy of testing applicants strategically as well as morally before inducting them. Naelis is his first inductee, and Elsworth took him to the Imperial Lands to join him in the fight against the Vanquisher, to test his conviction and willingness to kill. Elsworth does not believe that because he is the Captain he does not have to take up the duties of protector and helper, and finds equipment for the Fortress members when able, or renders assistance with learning. He regularly visits the Imperial Lands to kill the guards there, which has made him fairly unpopular with all the Empire.

When he retires from adventure and rests, he usually visits her, and though they still love each other, the passion has faded - for Elsworth's first passion is the destruction of evil, and no wife can stand being second to another passion, and the relationship is not the warmest right now.
He remembers meeting her very simply at a dance held by some members of the Arial Community of Galadon, he was enchanted by the grace of her movements, even for an arial, and her innocent beauty, the smell of her so pure and untainted. From then on, he held the image of her in his mind as the beauty and purity of the Light, all that he ought to defend. That, and the image of the Azure Fields, shown to him twice by Lord Vynmylak, the ideal that the world could possibly achieve if the darkness were wiped out or converted.

<130/1051hp 594/627m 931/931mv 19166tnl indoor civilized 1 PM> role read 6 Subject: More on the Elsworth Added Sun Sep 12 03:57:32 2004 at level 51: He was named Elsworth after a story-book character, a most courtly and kind gentleman called Emsworth, who was rather absent-minded and milky-tempered. His parents apparently had no great ambition for him other than grow up, learn, be good and kind. His surname, Isendelle, was the noble name of a rich aristocratic family, adopted from the founder of the family who had an elven benefactor by the name Isendelle. To him, the name has always meant a gentle love and gratitude to the Light, though no one has ever asked what it meant.
As a result, Elsworth typically shows kindness and decorum to his friends of the Light, and with them, he is jovial and occasionally nonsensical, and when he is babbling and eccentrically over-friendly it usually means that he is basking in all the kindness those who walk in the Light share with each other. Business is business, but sometimes Elsworth likes to just sit down and have a good chat. He has grown to like Tiahan, who he can usually strike up a conversation with, and be generally happy and non-businesslike, and less serious with. He spoke to Tiahan over matters of less asperity, such as his love for an elven healer, and lighthearted philosophical discourse.
He somehow prefers to embrace both the Maran and the Acolyte philosophies, by caring and protecting when he can, and being ruthlessly aggressive to his enemies. He likes being lighthearted and informal, though this does not
distract him from his duties.
<130/1051hp 594/627m 931/931mv 19166tnl indoor civilized 1 PM> role read 7 Subject: Elsworth's past Added Sat Jul 31 23:16:03 2004 at level 46: Elsworth was born to immensely wealthy parents, who, by a stroke of sheer misfortune, died during a lightning storm. Due to his lack of chronological advancement then, Elsworth did not remember much of his parents, nor did he ever know enough of them to miss them. Therefore, a Guardian was appointed to take care of the young arial. This Guardian was a government official of the cloud city in which Elsworth lived, she was an inordinately wealthy official, considering her not-overly-important position. Elsworth did not know it then, but the Guardian, by legal manipulation and politicking, had siphoned away much of the fortune bequeathed to him. When he came of age, he realised, slowly, though the Guardian knew not still, that he was cheated of what rightfully belonged to him. Day by day, he hid his animosity towards the Guardian with smiles, rank hypocrisy, smooth-faced political maneuvring. He thought he was good with the pretensions, that he had fooled the Guardian. By way of a magical device lent to him by a friend, he discovered that the Guardian intended to kill him, when he became old enough to gain the inheritance. He was at a loss, since he had no way of proving it to the lawmen, and moreover, the Guardian was more than capable of twisting the law to her advantage. The moment he came into his inheritance, he fled with the fortune, and settled down in Galadon.
Elsworth was originally educated to be a lawyer, and as such, he had great respect for the law, until he saw how the law was distorted to suit the
ambitions of avaricious officials who claim to act in the name of the law. He grew certain that the real problem with society was Evil, not law or the lack thereof. As such, he signed up with the warrior guild, using his fortune to acquire additional training to catch up with those who started at an earlier age. He waged a war, cold and systematic, against those of darkness, he sought their destruction not, with mindless hatred, but with the steely conviction of one whose philosophy is founded on experience.
His conviction was strengthened in Galadon, for he bore witness to more evil within Galadon. The gang of thugs within the sewers regularly threatened him and extorted money from him, for then he was too inexperienced to defeat the rugged smugglers. Perforce, he bowed down to their demands, relinquished his possessions, his pride, his principles, time and time again for the sake of self-preservation. The burning desire to see things corrected drove him along the channels of advancement in the guild, and he completed his basic course. He swore never to be weak, to be continually stronger than his enemies.

Oh and yes I'm a practice freak. Only with the Elsworth, because I read on Dio's (great source of info and misinfo) that dagger specs need lots of practice. Got all my dagger skills perfected before 35, underhand (which I hardly used) perfected within 1 level of getting it, most offensive weapons perfected (as in the practice list) before heroing. Dodge perfect before 30 if I'm not mistaken. Shield block at 30+. Resulted in the Elsworth being an able tank even with daggers in pk. Either that or no practice would have done the same thing, which I quite doubt.

Well, certainly working on the specs themselves matters, since the failure rate seems to drop quite a lot when perfected. You'd probably have tanking well with even 90% dodge given that you were an arial though.

Actually I made this character with absolutely no intention to hero at first, not even much of an intention to RP aside from kill evil, be nice to goodies.
Then I joined Fortress to take a peek at the powers and get more opportunities for killing evils. >=) It was really fun, and thanks everyone for it, including the gankers.
Dagger/Hand Enigma/Soul... what to say. I could outtank most warriors with a dagger and mace/axe offhand. Stun/wands didn't work as well as I would have liked it because I never had many wands aside from slow. And once slowed, people flee upon the hamstring/hurl/underhand, etc. Hand was not too useful for me, aside from when disarmed or stunning...
Oh, and daggers are hugely entertaining. Nothing's as fun as seeing the artery bleed, the hurl torso hit, the hamstring hit, the poison hit and knowing they're going to get 200 damage per tick. Huge fun.
Anyway by my own admission I'm a relative newbie. Played for about 2 years, not frequently.
Previous characters: Benvale (Conjie Herald), Lene (elf sword spec who never pkilled more than 5 people), Arilyn (shifter who got a form I didn't know how to use well (I'm being tactful)), Calcifer (chaotic good conjies are too easy), and a few assorted lowbies who never made it anywhere.
So I got into Fort, and was *VERY* happy with mantle of the phoenix which gave protection from evil (!!!) and detect evil, for an arial. So happily I went doing my thing, killing evils, knocking on imperial palace when I want to practise my weapons, etc. Then one day at level 50 Vynmylak pulls me to the Azure Fields (it's the first time I ever got transferred by an Immortal aside from once to the description room) and makes me a Maran. I go on with the happy pk stuff and get titled Tempered Blade of War. Cool title, I think =). So I never really expected to get Captain. Then one day Vynnie pulls me to Azure Fields and I stumble over trying to emote and put up some roleplay. I get Captain, and later on, a buggy leader weapon =( 17 pounds, two handed dagger, ave 26, 6 hit 6 dam, glow. I never see Shokai around to get another dagger reforged, so I basically lugged the dagger around in my inventory (symbolic sceptre of authority and all that) until a *long* while later when I was already very bored with the character I lose the dagger. And I never got it back again. After some fights... I decide to log on to delete. Oh and I added lots of role stuff after getting captain. Pretty evil of me, but I never thought Elsworth would be captain. I was not even sure he'd be a squire. Much less Maran.
And sadly there were NO Fortress people around =( So I wrote a sad note and told all my enemies they'd never fight me again. Then Illiet tells me he wants to fight me. So I go over to the Weald with outfit eq, call the FANTASTIC Maran powers, and fight Illiet for a while, winning with 26 hp. Then I delete =) Thanks Illiet!
And sadly with this death I simply forgot to take my gold out and donate it to some worthy souls. It was a fun goodbye with Calcifer, but it was really sad with Elsworth. Guess I'm emotionally attached to Elsworth. Like a dog >=).
Moving on to Maran powers... my god Maran powers are fantastic for warriors. Zeal, mantle, lightforge, berserk, warcry = can start pkilling imperials. Duergar would call you overpowered with the nifty searing light weapons. Eyes = useless necro. Never ever used cry of deliverance, sadly. Never ever used my leader weapon in a real pk, sadly. Oh there's phoenix brand too which I only used for killing outers and stuff.
Anyway I can't remember just everyone, so just say what you like and I'll answer. It's weird to meet people I know with other characters and be all foreign with them. Like Audriel I knew with Calcifer, and that Golronny dwarf. Sometimes I think it might be nice to have an OOC channel but it does eat away at the realism of the game.
Tiahan was nice to talk to. Too bad you deleted. I *liked* your grumpy stage. It must be male menopause or something, and we'd go raiding inners and got a nasty shock when the scarab inner whacked us.
Golron... Well I couldn't be too friendly with you since you were Marshall and all. But if I still played Calcifer I can imagine it would be, umm, different =P
Rual, Kelin, Damell, all those mighty warriors who weren't captain. I felt bad taking that place when there were so many mightier ones out there. Includes the paladins and Elstratuviel too. Just about every Maran.
Imperials... err nothing much to say. Good fights. The sheer number of you means I should always have enemies. Go pump more target practice out of the Palace! My other characters like them too.
Scions... the invokers are too deadly. Two buffets engulfs geysers cones pillars forkeds novae whatever and I'd be so badly hurt it's not funny. And warriors don't have lots of money to do heal heal with. If hurl throat lands, they just come back one or two ticks later and cast my ass into oblivion.
Just say something if I unfairly missed you out.
A little explanation about my/Elsworth's behaviour. I play this game for fun, so I never taunt. Really, never. Aside from asking them for a fight I never even call people cowardly scum or anything and repeatedly tell them to fight me. I never indiscriminate loot on a non raid retrieve kill. Even on those sometimes I don't. Only do so when they are coming repeatedly and taking gear stops them for one or two hours. I guess I don't like to make the game ugly for other people too. But Elsworth was NOT sphere honor, he was sphere war. So he'd gang too. Quite a few people had this silly impression that the mighty captain must be honourable and such. I told Saayayse I was not honorable, and it's totally true.
But I can never roleplay too well because I always remember the player behind the character, who's probably another person who plays the game for fun too. If I had a choice I'd be discussing tactics with my enemies.
No more Fortress for me for a while I guess. No evils because I never play evils.

You repeatedly say you don't roleplay too well.
Then you say you will not play evils.
Allow me to suggest that you play an evil, and anything else you don't routinely play, and that will improve your roleplay.
And you might find it fun.

Ah well I play for fun really. It's not very fun to constantly force myself to be an asshole when I'm nice =P Maybe it's just a matter of choice...

Esp back with benvale. He was funny.
'Gratz on the whole leader thing. I second the play an evil or something else you never thought to play, if nothing else just for sh*** and giggles.
See ya around, probably with another character I like. Well It may be a while, as RL has me slammed up against a wall beating the hell outta me. Hopin' that will change soon.
Roll up another one...

Hey, well im sorry to see you go. I always liked Elsworth, I still remember showing you around the Fort when you were first inducted. Haha. Well I liked at the end of Tiahan, when we did raiding and stuff that was a lot of fun. You were one of the greatest ppl in Tiahans life. You also inducted a character of mine as well. Olerin. Heh. I made him because of you partly lol. But he was never as good. I just suck at pk i guess. That is why Acolyte suited me so well. Well, hope to see ya back in the fields. Cya.

Glad to hear that. I was somewhat hesitant about Olerin because you didn't seem too sure about your pk, but I guess I was lenient. =P Hope I've been nice to you..

I will take that as a compliment. I'd never have made the inch of the captain you were, though. Elstratuviel was a bit of a stand out, in the sence that she was/wanted to be taken seriously, but my RP really all came down to just having fun, and I hope all enjoyed my characters. I was never really much of a ten chapter role player, and neither did I enjoy taking the time for interviews or the like.. that's also why it still took Baldar for instance days to try to pour my feelings into words.. the actions are pretty much there, but words .. huh. Anyways, those things just to say that my feelings were/are that you were no less of a captain than any other before you, and that you didn't deserve to be captain any more than the others you mentioned. You did a good job doing what you did. Good luck with your next.

I don't really put in too much RP, after all it's more of a game. But just as long as there's no OOC impurity or no reason for one's actions (mainly pkilling, which can be done on the basis of align war, ethos war, race war, etc. I never make a role against a particular type of people or a person. Maybe I should start trying)

Good job on the elf ranger, it takes guts and determination to play a weak combo. Hopefully Swiftstrike actually balances out elf weakness.
Good luck!
My current character won't be going into Fortress though it's a goodie again.

Thanks! I'm still trying to learn the game and warrior types are really a lot easier to play in straight combat than thief types. All I had to do in combat was mostly artery, hurl, try to hamstring, stab/trip, etc. Dagger specs are seriously evil.

I had a lot of fun fighting you, and was glad you had the courage you did, always seemed up for a fight. We got each other here and there and other times we both escaped, it was good times all around. Good luck with the next and see you around.
