Ok maybe it's cause of an Entropist who's bears ate each other or maybe because rangers and wood elves aren't acting like rangers or wood elves at all. Rp'ing an evil ranger or a wood elf that tries to act civil is cool but the rp is realling lacking. Offering someone a hot meal in the inn followed by a mug of ale really just doesn't strike me like a wood elf. Nor a ranger that's evil so he can use a certain axe and justify taking gear from imperials. Just me whining though so don't think much of it.

What you mean is that they aren't acting like the stereotype of a wood-elf or ranger.

If I look at today's press, I see an article about a family doctor who murdered hundreds of his patients. Does that mean if someone wanted to rp a doctor it couldn't be a psychopathic ones, because doctors are in the job either for money or to help people?

Don't agree. There was a lot of rp to my druid who was trying to be a trib. But you'd probably think a druid shouldn't be a trib, or shouldn't be interested in tribs. Plus I've played an evil ranger when half-drows came out and I think that was ok too. I specifically waited for the half-drow to come out so that I could fit an rp reason to being an evil ranger, rather than just rolling an evil human.

Why? Is it not possible that a wood-elf, when exposed to the comforts of civilisation, actually finds he likes them, unlike the rest of his race? It seems to me that some wild animals can enjoy life as domestic animals.

I think you are fixated on all rangers having to fit the stereotype that you have of them.

I agree. I played Aeldermaine as an atypical wood-elf. I never got around to his role, but he had grown up as the child of diplomatic emmissaries from Eryn Galen to the other nations. Thus, an atunement to the fineries of other cultures.

Several things to take into consideration here. When you begin your life in Thera, you are already a certain age. Whether it be a young 16 year old human, or a 143 year old elf. You can learn an awful lot in 143 years. Not to mention that the idea of roleplaying is the grow and adapt to your situations. Thus, an evil ranger could eventually, in theory, relinquish the ways of evil and become good (anyone remember the main character of Final Fantasy 2?). So, a good amount of people play 'the safe route' because its easier, but I give kudos to the civilized orc, or the evil Darsylonian elf. Those are the richest characters who are best remembered. "I'm evil because I'm a drow" is not good enough. "I'm inherently evil as a drow of my race who seeks total power and domination" is a good reason for roleplay.

Thus, Aeldermaine, the diplomat who made many a friend out of many a foe, lies to rest. There won't be another Aeldermaine, ever, so why not try to make him count?
