I understand what the Chasm is about, and I think I understand what Eshval is about (well no, she confuses the #### out of me), but I don't see why Eshval would want to bring about the Eternal Night.
Is it just for fun? An effective way to kill the uninspired?
I'm thinking of rolling a follower, but I would like to be a Scion also and I'm trying work this neatly into their role.

Let's put it in perspective. Long rune - Eshval cares nothing about the 'Eternal Night' and the Prophecy except how it benefits her. The Nightwalkers are slaves to be used in her mind, but so are the Scions, for they aren't her chosen followers.
I don't care if my followers become a Scion, I have had a follower in every cabal, so I am somewhat adaptable depending on the follower's take on my religion.
Be a Scion if you can get in, being my follower is not a shoe-in to the cabal. The Nightborne feel that any who aren't them are effectively peasants, fit only for food or play. Non-Nightborne have the obligation to be food or toys.
