I'll try to keep this vague... let me know if it's too incoherent.

Having that thing doesn't mean what you seem to think it does. Maybe this is just one of those things that doesn't translate well, I'm not sure.

The guy you're fighting can still do what he did to you; having that thing just means that the guy who gave you that thing isn't going to punish you for fighting the guy you're fighting.

Let me know if that doesn't clear it up any.

I know what spell was cast there and it probably should have an echo for that, though.
