I did as asked up to Danellanor, but he wouldn't do what he usually does, and hand it back. Couldn't finish the quest because of it....
I did all steps up to him. Not sure if maybe it's a bug or just didn't like me this time.

My guess is that you leveled out of the limits of the quest. What level was it when he stopped talking?
