Ok...So I have " X" which shows as a talisman.

Expected: Brandish X you would get the protection.

reality: Attempts to brandish it says you can only brandish talismans

First, just type 'brandish'. Not 'brandish thing' and your problem is resolved since you will brandish whatever is in your hand.

Second, I held the same talisman and did brandish X and it worked fine.

But I also didn't need to. Just BRANDISH does fine.

Were you actually holding X? You need to hold it before you can brandish with it.
