I had a fight where an assassin hit me with nerve 8 times and multiple kicks and never was hit with quills. I think because he may have been wielding a spear, the check failed for skills that make direct contact.

It just seems weird to me that a two handed weapon would prevent a bare foot or hand from getting hit when trip, kick, bash and associated skills do cause the effect.

I understand why, but that's a level of detail that has a very low ROI with regard to implementation.
