You drink a potion of return.

I did not have a skin in my inventory at the time. When I try it with a skin in my inventory it works just fine and I drink from the skin no matter what I am holding.

I am then recalled to my pit. This also happens if I hold a potion and type "quaff skin," "quaff nomnom," etc, but it does not happen if I have a potion held and type "drink" or "quaff" with no other words.

Is that how it is supposed to work?

This is what allows you to actually drink a potion while you are blind I think.
