No it's not a bug. No it's not using your hand to hand (you get a chance to learn your opponents weapon skills when you're fighting, that's what happened here). The damage on bat is lower than a typica hit because it's unblockable and has a chance to maladict.

I perfected hand to hand spamming this skill. I've also got logs of hitting for MANGLES/DEMOS with my staff and hitting bat for "injures". It also does not do the damage type of the weapon - and yet says "you whirl your staff/polearm". I know of the effects and such like an extra attack or -regeneration, but I'd be pretty damn miffled if it wasn't using hand to hand considering it did the exact same damage amount and I literally perfected hand to hand spamming it.
