Seeing as how separate is now a general skill, it throws in a grapple, but I don't have the grapple skill.

It states in the helpfile that you separate them from the group and attempt a grapple, but it does not say anything about how you must first have the grapple skill... At least something needs fixing here, this is a pretty expensive skill.

You're still going to need grapple to try to grapple on a separate, but now you won't try if you don't have the skill.
