Lashes of the slave can make mobs drop items with the hidden flag.

You then can't grab them, and when the mob dies, it won't have the item.

The specific mobs (and you will probably want to edit this out of this post) were:

It's possible I screwed up and failed to detect invis, as an NPC did dispel it at once point, but I didn't think it was that.
