Ive noticed a trend with raids and counteraids. Even with even odds, the fortressites seem to drop like flies. Is it cabal powers? Over inducting newbies? Less PK guidance from the immortals or leaders? What is your take on it?

(I'd log in but I'm at a public pc that doesn't have cookies enabled...and I'm not going to twink around with someone else's pc)
There's a lot of factors that have been listed that I think nail it...(admittedly I haven't been around, but a lot of them were the same issues plaguing the fort when I was). One that I think is good to bring up that Nep sorta mentioned (it may have been said somewhere else but I'll admit, I only skimmed the comments)...is, well...to quote Spaceballs: "now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb". I'm not hammering down on all goodie players...just that do to a combination of many things (including as Nep pointed out, the rampant inability to really go lonewolfing as a goodie)...the more experienced players tend towards evil characters. It's a skew that has sorta always existed.
Is it changeable? Probably. My advice, if you're a hardcore goodie player...learn everything you can, put your ego on check, and try to teach the masses. Learn who can learn, and who is just going to be constant meat-shield...and roll with it afterwards.

In empire, it is relatively easy to get the first 1/2/3 powers. Almost all of them are pk oriented.
In scion, if you are good enough to get in, you get some damned fine powers.
Then let's look at squires. I'll only use my own personal experiences here.
In squires...you get detect evil....and protection which might or might not help you.
Then you get to spend a total of about 600 play hours over a couple of characters never getting the bump to full maran. All the while reading pbf's and looking at the timelines of other people who delete at 120 hours, 95 of them as full maran.
Kinda kicks the junk all over the place in the "I can do it" department.
So you have a combination of effects.
A higher percentage of your enemies will have nice cabal pk powers than will your allies.
This also leads to people just not wanting to bother with the question "will someone notice my rp/pk in the next 300 hours so I can have more than detect evil?"....and just roll up evils anyway. Leading to a higher percentage of people who want to, and enjoy, cabal oriented pk to choose fort enemies. Which leads to a higher percentage of forties being the ones who are there just for the Rp (not that I am down on those kinds, I am almost always that kind).
I think a large portion of this kind of disparity could be fixed by having a middle ground between "oooh, now I can see red glow around that fire giant/drow/duergar group bashing me down!!" and "WORLD-GOTO-EYES-OF-FLAME-UNLIMITED-WEAPONS-FIRE-IMMUNITY-PWNAGE!"
Some sort of middle ground might encourage more people who play for and enjoy the cabal pk to try out the fort, which would bring in more pk experience, which would go a long way to teaching the newbs and getting them up to competitiveness faster.
The other part, is that if the empire has leadership that is doing it's job, and some empirial did any of the things listed in nepenthe's list of hilarity below more than once, they would be booted or demoted, and would either learn their lesson and do better or delete, learn their lesson, and do better on their next character.
Goodies just have to hold each others hands and say "damn, we will do better next time! but remember, it isn't about eq, it's about strength of spirit!" before going back in to get slaughtered.
(as a personal aside, I had a squire that had to deal with a maran telling squires to try to retrieve solo, instead of in a group. This was one of the maran who made maran in 50 hours, telling my 200 hour squire to do something that got me killed more than once. This was also a maran who deleted before hitting the 150 hour mark. This is the main reason I haven't played fort since, I believe the effort->reward dynamic is broken because it's just one HUGE step and requires hit and miss imm acknowledgement, in my ideal game the effort->reward dynamic isn't a crapshoot)

They need some proper mage powers. Even if it's just one to replace lightforge, or if it's something different in their mantle. Melee classes get a lot more out of those powers than any others do, and Shamans/Paladins get good mileage, but transmuters/shifters/invokers get it the worst.
Are we asking too much?

Acolyte powers > Maran powers for an invoker. For my play style, I'd probably pick even Scribe power over the Maran power set.
I love the Maran powers stylistically, but it's true that they really favor some kinds of characters over others.

Granted, you've played a Maran shifter and I don't think I ever have, but I actually like the Maran powers for a shifter. Lightforge and brand are mostly a waste, but zeal is nice and eyes is a godsend.

thanks for pointing that out. I play so rarely nowadays that I have trouble keeping up with what's going on currently, I admit. Speaking as one of the forties who gets slaughtered the most, I'm gonna chalk up my losses to early stupidity that just kinda stuck for a good while. Raz is my first Fortie healer and only my second healer ever. My other healer was a Herald for god's sake, I mean how much raid action do you think you actually see in the Inn anyhow? I rage deleted for a while just so I could think about things and try to get Raz's head on right. I had a chant going-'I'm not a fighter dammit, I'm a healer! Don't kick! Heal dammit, heeeeal!'. Or something like that. Heh, I must really suck, because just looking around the forums with no real search pattern, I've seen several either outright or obscure mentionings of a particular healer who is spamming kick when she should be healing and the like.
All I have to say is that I'm enjoying the opportunity, I'm trying to learn from it, and hopefully, unless I have an aneurism anytime soon-I'll keep learning. I just seem to be better at Rp than actual game pk/defense mechanics.

#525, "Newb Factor:"
In response to Reply #0

It's a lot of things, but there's one point on the Fort Newb factor that I don't think has been made yet, exactly.
If you're Fort, you can't kill your cabalmates for ####ing up.
I think the median player in Fort is not a lot worse than the median player in Empire. The big difference is, the bottom of the barrel is way lower in Fort.
Not being able to count on your allies to do the smartest thing possible in a given situation is not a big deal. Not being able to count on your allies to not do the very dumbest thing possible in a given situation, on the other hand, is.
If I'm playing Empire and one of my cabalmates does the stupidest thing I've seen that year, then tops it twice in the same day, at a minimum I can never group with that person again. Maybe I'll try to give them some pointers and help them out, but if they won't be taught, I can kill them repeatedly, either literally with permission from above or in more subtle ways. If I kill him three times, he probably won't want to group with me anymore, and that's good for my survival.
In Fort, not only can't you kill that guy, but you're pretty much obligated to keep taking him with and treating him like a human being.
It's possible to be so bad, it would be beneficial for your cabal if you deleted or at least dropped link. I know, you think, one more guy swinging in the raid? How could that be bad? Beyond the obvious anti-gang factors, believe me, an extremely bad player can get an entire raid killed. I would give some examples of things I've seen recently, but I think they're mostly player giveaways, and I'm harsh enough on PBF without more people needing to hear me bash them today.

This is going back a ways now, but a few that come to mind:
- Fort healers who healing sleep themselves or others one step north of the Fort outer as in-range enemies are beating it down and will have it dead within a tick or so.
- Fort healers who spam kick in a PK while their allies die. This is a recurring and perennial favorite for all badly-played healers, but the RP angle of Acolytes being what it is I'd say they get more of them.
- Fort healers who spam lash on NPCs while their allies die.
- Characters who announce their distress on cb (slept, being ganged, what's mongoose doing here?, etc.) but neglect other crucial information, such as who's doing it or where they are.
- One of my favorites: Scion has the Fortress Orb. Fort has circa 7 level 40+ characters, Scion has circa 5+ -- something of a numbers advantage to Fort, but without powers and coming at Scion on their turf, it should be interesting. Scion has one summoner (low-mid 40s), Fort has one summoner (51). They hatch an elaborate plan, involving most of Team Fort resting just outside the Chasm while a warrior and their summoner (who don't have the Scion summoner in range, thus, no summon race) summon one of the Scions out, drive/pull them south, and whip on him with their assembled might. Much time is spent making sure everyone understands their role in the attack. Despite this elaborate plan, Fort summoner leads them to the Scion cabal, leads everyone in, and just immediately murders the Nightwalker. Fort's healer makes this worse by spamming lash on the Nightwalker (see above.) Nearly everyone on Team Fort dies without recovering the Orb.
- Scion has the Orb. Several Squires and one Maran meet up somewhere not too close to the Scion cabal, maybe Fields of Balator, to retrieve. The Maran tells them it would be suicide to all go to retrieve together as a group; instead, he orders them to head there one at a time. Cue horror movie music.
- Fort is being raided; Fort's numbers and the invader numbers are roughly equal. Team Fort shows up one at a time and each predictably dies. This is also a recurring one.
- Fort support character doesn't word non-cursed clearly screwed command denied other Fort character; said character dies.
- Fort support character does word high-health non-maledicted doing-just-fine other Fort character; other Fort characters die in the raid missing that perfectly healthy character's contribution.
- Midbie Fort warrior goes to Empire to try to get the Orb back without a return potion. Centurions come up behind him, and hilarity ensues. Like watching midbie Battle get their item back from Empire, but sad.

#517, "My opinion as a Fortier."
In response to Reply #0

In my opinion, there was little to no combat leadership. I do remember (quite well) a leader or two doing training runs, having different people lead the raid, and telling everyone what they should do. That was excellent training, as it gave us the chance to tell people what we want them to do based on our skills, and maybe tell them what they should be doing based on our past playing of that class, and knowing its skills.
I hated seeing a 5 on 3 Raid turn into 2 on 3 within moments. Protective classes weren't protecting and noone stuck to a plan (if there was one) on hitting one person, taking them out, then moving on to the next. There needs to be 1 leader of a raid/defense. One person giving orders...Isn't that what the Captain & Marshall are supposed to be for ? I understand they are not always there, but someone should be in charge. Everyone running about willy-nilly is not a good defense tactic.
Second thing, I think there are, on the whole, less experienced players in the Fort. Many Vets like a challenge and so pick something they can use an RP twist, or just like the underdog. The Fort doesn't look like an Underdog because they have numbers. Not skill, necessarily, just high numbers. See the Imm comments on the two Emperials (the Minatour and... another ?) who defended like 5 on 2, and took out 4 of the raiders. Granted Empire Inner defense is more like 5 on 4 in that instance, but still it shouldn't have been 4 Raiders biting it.
So...to sum up. 1:Lack of true leadership. Vets have played many classes, tell the others how to use their skills to the fullest (even if its after the raid) 2:Lack of Experience.
Completely my opinion in the matter. File as needed.

Might as well add my opinion since my computer is still the suxxor and won't work so I can only drool about CF on the boards.
I believe it to be a combination of things. Oh and first of all, I've been part of several raids and defenses where we were outnumbered and came out on top. But yes, this seems to be the exception and we often take unneccessary deaths. Here are my excuses :p
Powers : Most of the Fort consists of squires and scribes. Their powers are very limited, and for a squire shaman-paladin-conjie they gain nothing from the powers at all. They might as well be uncaballed. Newbs? : Yes, many of us are not the greatest pkers. If you want to play a powerhouse in pk, you don't play an Acolyte. You're never going to have good gear because you're often sacrificing yourself to save others etc... So our healers are almost ALWAYS naked and have very few hps and mana. This means they always die first in a raid because they are too stubborn to word and save themselves.
On the other hand, we are almost always retrieving or fighting with empire; our main enemy. This is a generalization, but their support classes (Healer

25% is probably what Nepenthe calls "mad dog" types whose heart outweighs their current skill level - so they charge into centurion-induced massacres whereas low-death-rate Vets would probably wait a few hours to amass a sufficiently safe gangbang.
Can't say about the other 35%, but I imagine those are the two biggest factors.

On the other hand, we are almost always retrieving or fighting against the empire; our main enemy. This is a generalization, but their support classes (Healer or bard) are often well geared and more prudent. And never underestimate the power of centurions + black sanc. As I see it, this is often the main factor in a lot of Fort slaughters. Stuck at centurions, our healer dies and we all just get tooled.
Leadership problem? : You may be right that Fort lacks proper leadership in respects to pk. I know many goodies find it inappropriate bossing around other goodies on how to fight, as it seems condescending. I do think myself and Alriac are getting more stern on telling others what to do. But I do get a bad feeling OOC when I yell at other Forties that I know are doing their best but are simply learning as they go.
Let's remember, this game is about having fun, not having the best pk ratio. At least not for me and most other Forties I've talked to. I think the evil mentality is more pk oriented, which is what would be expected of course.
Alright, that's the bored Marshalls opinion for the day! I actually have to do work for once, since I can't avoid it to play CF.

I think this is more or less spot on. I'd throw one other thing in, experience. I don't mean individual, but group wise. The empire is pretty damn proficient at playing to each other's abilties, while the fort everyone seem to kind of be doing their own thing, even if you make a plan. Mostly agree. Fortress members are lazy.
But I don't think that cabal powers are a huge factor. Most imperials don't have very pk oriented cabal powers. And good's "protection evil" often adds more than "dark feast" or "shove" or "anti-faerie-fire". I can think only about two non-leaders imperial powers that are helpful in raids "black sanc" and "imperial training" ( perhaps also "black circle" and priest's channel, but you can live without it ) and they are available only for elite ranked imperials.
Also, one certain maran power is extremily unfair in raids. You can't even hide behind the inner guardians.

Elite is easier to get than Maran. For me (tending to play, if I do, when Fort imms don't), Sect Leader is easier to get than Maran/Acolyte.
I'm sort of floored that you don't think that those are better PK powers than the squire/scribe set, at least. If I'm a good character going to fight evil or an evil character going to fight good and I can use magic, I'm probably packing protection evil already. It's generally the easiest and longest lasting form of DR for me to get. You thus have a power which appeals most strongly to newbie or lazy players and for better players isn't even a power.
I'm not going to tell you that light into shadow is awesome, but I've seen it save the life of many a shadow. Piercing gaze is great, nearly eliminating the only Outlander power that really matters against Empire without raiding when it's in play. (Actually, all the Sect Leader powers are great.) Black circle is crack-ass good. The whole set of divine powers is great -- I'd easily bet on a group with an elite divine healer over one twice their size. Imperial training and blade of the codex are solid powers in the right hands.
None of those powers, some better than others, is easily duplicated by a minor prep item.
>Also, one certain maran power is extremily unfair in raids. >You can't even hide behind the inner guardians.
It's not really any worse than the wack the Emperor can throw at you, in my opinion, though it can be really hard to deal with for the two classes affected. Coincidentally, those are the two classes that, as Emperor, should be able to fight 3 Maran and win or at the least survive given equal playing ability. I'm not sure if that exactly balances, but there are times that I feel sorry for those two classes and there are times I feel sorry for Fort kids that need to fight them.

Bah, I smell immortal conspiracy. I agree that elites are somewhat easier than a full maran, though I would argue about sect leaders. Fortress have 4 leaders, Empire has 5. Not a huge diference.

I, personally, do that, many don't. I'm talking here in general, about an average player who usually hates preps. Of course, if a player bothers to prepare, then imperial powers add something while squire/scribe's don't.
>I'm not going to tell you that light into shadow is awesome, >but I've seen it save the life of many a shadow.
Haven't seen it saving somebody's life, I bash them to death regardless It's a good power, but in raids it is less important than on the hunt.
>Piercing gaze is great, nearly eliminating the only Outlander power >that really matters against Empire without raiding when it's >in play. (Actually, all the Sect Leader powers are great.)
Agreed. Though, Fort leader powers are fine as well.
>Black circle is crack-ass good.
It is suck-ass bad. Well, not really, but, again, I don't think it is the deciding power in raids. ( If your opponents aren't dumb )
>The whole set of divine >powers is great -- I'd easily bet on a group with an elite >divine healer over one twice their size. Imperial training >and blade of the codex are solid powers in the right hands.
Elite imperial healers are beasts. The problem is ... they don't heal anyone !!!! Especially when they are not in your PK, they may just laugh at your face when you are dying against raiders. Also, imperial healers usually have much higher quality compared with forties, so it is not only powers that scare people.
>>Also, one certain maran power is extremily unfair in raids. >>You can't even hide behind the inner guardians. > >It's not really any worse than the wack the Emperor can throw >at you, in my opinion, though it can be really hard to deal >with for the two classes affected. This is where I disagree with a gnome. This power is just unfair in raids. ( And is dumb in general ). The whole maran group can enter the innner guardians and attack an AP/necro before these guardians hit them, thus the said AP/necro have to tank the whole group. Even if you are Emperor AP/necro, tanking several paladins/warriors usually is not the easiest way to defend. Moreover, if you fled from the inner guardians or coming to defend and marans sit down from the inners you will have very hard time to pass them. ( there are six direction from that room )
Skilled marans kick arses in raids. Remember Jaegrubai + axe spec permas? Summon + bash/pincer + templar lagging strikes. They would just sit at the entrance ( and you can't keep your preps up all the time ) until they summon you. Then you are permalagged to death.

I don't think sect leader is easier for everyone; just me with my particular play times (or lack of).

It's true, it doesn't stop bash. It's really good against some classes, though. If it takes you five or six tries to faerie fire a thief as a shaman, doesn't that radically change how many fights with them will go?
>Agreed. Though, Fort leader powers are fine as well.
As far as I know, Maran leaders don't get one. Acolyte leaders typically get a particular one that's cool but pretty foofy.
>>Black circle is crack-ass good. > >It is suck-ass bad. Well, not really, but, again, I don't >think it is the deciding power in raids. ( If your opponents >aren't dumb )
I'm curious as to what your counter is for black circle (with a group in a raid) that doesn't also beat the paladin/axe summoning thing you describe below. Both are really hard to deal with as many defenders, but I can't think of a situation in which black circle wouldn't be harder to deal with, given equal groups.
>Elite imperial healers are beasts. >The problem is ... they don't heal anyone !!!! >Especially when they are not in your PK, they may just laugh >at your face when you are dying against raiders. >Also, imperial healers usually have much higher quality >compared with forties, so it is not only powers that scare >people.
I've watched a lot of Fort/Empire raids, and I can safely say that an Empire healer is at least ten times more likely to heal someone when they need it than a Fort healer. Granted, this is partly because some of the Fort healers are typically well-meaning but incompetent.
There's a lot I could say here, good and bad, about both sides but most of my thoughts are tangled up in current characters, so I'll pass for now.
>Skilled marans kick arses in raids. Remember Jaegrubai + axe >spec permas? Summon + bash/pincer + templar lagging strikes.
Can't say that I do. It was a time when I wasn't playing.

I want to point out that Fortress often has better groups for raiding. Usually it is because they have more support classes. Invokers and transmuters are rare in Empire, healers are somewhat rare as well.
Also Empire is often raided by many cabals at once.
Thank gods that Fortress is a newbie friendly cabal, else the Empire would be ruined in a moment.

You've no idea how incredibly vindicated I feel having you say it here though. Cheers.
I don't know, becoming Maran is a really large pain in the ass, considering how really, really hard it is to not spam die as a fortress comparitively speaking. For their given power set, I think its rather strict. Granted, I'm coming at it from the opinion that, you shouldn't get early promotions by being really bad. As an offhand observation, I am given the impression its easier to become a Maran if you leave 30 corpses strewn about the Fortress every login.
This is the opposite of Empire, where unless you're a non-russian, they're typically eager to spam promote you if you look like you can kick some butt.
Then again, I'm jaded.

I have not played a maran but I've sensed something similar as you have. It is better to have 5-30 and showing heart than 30-5 and being a effektive fighter.
Then with the russian thing, I don't think it is that bad at all. And I've heard that it is a certain notorious cheating US guy that recently had a perma on the council.

>Then with the russian thing, I don't think it is that bad at >all.
I think a big chunk of the appearance of it is just the play time thing. Russian mudders tend to play a lot at a block of times that U.S. mudders less frequently do, and it's natural to want to promote people that you see around doing things.
To a degree, I think the Empire imms need to be a balancing force and inject a little sanity here. For example: There was a particular elite that a recent Emperor was always trying to get demoted to free up the spot, because he never saw the guy on. Meanwhile at U.S. prime time, that same guy was frequently the only hero in the cabal on for long stretches against hordes of enemies. If I was that guy and the Emperor demotes me (in this case, I don't think it ever actually happened), I might well feel it was unfair, because I'm doing everything that can reasonably be expected of me and I end up ousted in favor of some guy who speaks not-quite-perfect English curiously like the Emperor.

I don't doubt a lot of it is playing time, but, I don't doubt a lot of playing time is related to whom is in power. Its just rather convenient how things work out, too convenient, to say its 100% coincidence. I don't mean "Russian Permas", I mean in general people who don't want to log in during times where they might get their asses whooped.
Those of us whom are jaded about the Russians are so after that incident with the site w/ quests and cabal related cheating stuff on it that got shut down not too long after its existance became public knowledge. Its somewhat hard to not be distrustful after that. Additionally that group whose names all showed up on a forum for another mud didn't help.
That being said, yeah, in that situation, it'd really suck to get booted.

Let's remember, this game is about having fun, not having the best pk ratio. At least not for me and most other Forties I've talked to. I think the evil mentality is more pk oriented, which is what would be expected of course.
Yes, yes and more yes. This comment makes me happy. This whole thread on the other hand. Its kind of akin to the big kid on the playground scoring the 15th goal on you and then asking, "How come you suck so much?" *sniffs quietly in the corner becuase he was that little boy*
Corrlaan followers are NICE. With a capital NICE!

I disagree. I like fortress sometimes. Other Imms have made the same comment though about them dropping like flies. Heck, Ive played fortresites and have personally seen half my side die in a large fight while the other side has equal proportions. I couldnt explain it. Was just seeing if others are noticing the same trend.

But I do get >a bad feeling OOC when I yell at other Forties that I know are >doing their best but are simply learning as they go.
Ever had a superior (Officer/Manager) that tried to get results, but was too easy on everyone ? Sucked for me, I know. I'd rather you and the Captain be tough when it's required. Don't feel bad for doing your job, and most importantly your DUTY.
If everyone dies in defense, it's your whole responsibility (as I've read it) to make sure that never happens again (or in the first place, with proper training).
If the Fort gets their Raiding butts handed to them, then the Captain needs to step up and get the troops in line. You can be pleasant about this, or you can be a total ass Boot camp Sgt. The first is probably better for the Fort, the later for Empire or Scion. I was taken aside and told what I'd done wrong. I respected the Captain and the fact that he set me straight privately, I made sure I never screwed up like that again.
You can be nice, but not doing your Duty as a Leader is worse than bad, and it gets people more-killed. They'll enjoy the game more if they get less-killed. I'm not saying a better PK'er, but less-killed is a good start. I respect strong leaders who lead. I can't stand Wuss leaders(*) who wear the hat and do nothing, then wonder why everyone's dead.
(*)Not directed at the current leaders, I don't know them at all. -Cassman-
