There was a Talon of the Phoenix that was in Battle, but that was quite some time ago. I wouldn't care to speculate on exactly how long ago, but it would be measured in years.

This is just my opinion, but I think you could absolutely play a Maran villager. I can think of a role right now that would fit the bill... however, that role might cause you to be kicked out of Battle if certain things happen, and depending on how the Bosses view it. Just remember with a role like that, with elements that don't naturally mesh well, there may be a time when you have to choose between one or the other. In other words, plan for it, and think about what your character would do when it happens. Sticking to a hard role like that, through thick and thin, can be quite rewarding, but you often have to pay with a few bruises.
