#35, "The return of Chatting with Unca Floofi"
|
So, true believers, fans and those just bored and wondering what I've got to say. I decided to dust off the ole Floofi chat and ramble about something that I might have rambled about before, yet somehow still seems to need chatting about. So, preramble over...chatting begins.
Lately there has been a huge push along alignment axis which given the current cabal set ups and what not is normal. What disturbs me though is the amount of people who feel they can't do it alone. Both goods and evils seem to fall into this trap of the 'Team' mentality. Granted some of this is built into the game, and everyone needs allies. However it seems that lately both sides take it to the extremes and only play when their side is up. This, quite honestly, sucks. I know it's been a part of CF for eons and eons, since as long as we've had cabals we've had people who only play the up side. Simply put...it's gotta stop. The game is amazingly unfun when there is no challenge....and while this padding the powered side does lead to the underdogs getting quite a challenge, it's still lame.
Along these same lines, something that bugs me is the constant bitching and pissing as soon as the scales start to switch. For the love of Floofi people, the pendulum is going to swing somewhat...I wouldn't ever want to see 100% balance, since it's the flux that causes some of the interest.
So what am I saying here? Since on one hand it seems like I'm saying don't always play the up side, yet on the other I'm saying there will always be flux and pissing and moaning about it is also bad. Basically what I'm saying is this: play what you want to play, and stick to it regardless of how challenging or boring it is. There will be upswings and downdrops as you play. You'll have days when you have a solid team of allies and you'll have days when nothing seems to go your way. Stick with it, either way. Tossed into this I'll toss out a brief rant on rage deletion. If you take a pkdeath, or a stupid mobdeath....it's not the end of the world. The mentality of rage deletion amazes me since what I tend to read it as is 'I'm too good to be killed, so I'm going to delete because of sheer embarassment'. Arrogance kills. Don't be arrogant, keep your ego and your competitiveness in check....and you'll go far and probably learn something along the way.
so spake the Floofi and all was good.

If you're searching a mage's laboratory and find a bookcase (or whatever) with nothing in it, is it really that hard to put two and two together?

I agree with everything you said, and I'd like to add something here that I have seen from my own experiences with past characters. When you roll your character, don't even roll it based on the current good-evil situation, and don't roll a char just so you can get to know a particular person better. In my experience, that just leads to the feeling of a wasted character and wasted time in the end. I think a character should always be rolled after getting a good idea for a role, like 'Hey, I think it would be fun to play a drunk-ass dwarf!' If you are already playing something, write the idea down and promise yourself to play that next. Also, I think you kind of reinforced what I was saying on Vynmylak's board as well. Mr Floofi, I have a question as well. What are your thoughts on the difference between deletion and rage deletion? Should a character feel obligated to play out a character to con or age death, even if it gets boring? I mean, on one hand, you have to consider the other players it affects, but you also have to consider the fact that this is a game and should be fun as well. Yaofhil, Smashed Follower of Chumps

A fine question. I generally try to play my characters for about a week after the boredom and frustration sets in...since if it doesn't get better in a week, it's time to let the character go. This is just my opinion, and your mileage may vary. Deletion because the character is simply no fun...that's a no brainer. If you're not having fun, it's probably time to make a new character. The catch here is that a lot of times if you play through the initial frustration and/or boredom something may happen that suddenly makes the character fun again. The trick is knowing how long it generally takes you to refind the fun. Since there are just some characters that the fun is gone, and short of divine intervention...the fun isn't coming back. Rage deletion on the other hand, is the ultimate form of chumptasticness, as far as I'm concerned. Since it's kinda like having one moment of frustration that causes you to toss away (in many cases) several hundred hours. This is why we started tossing rage deletion messages out when someone starts to do it, in hopes of shaming them/making them laugh and relax/or defusing the anger so they'll sit back and realise 'hrm...maybe there is still life to this character'.
so spaketh the Floofi and all was laid to floofination!

There was several times where I started to grow really bored with Ulthur, and I think twice where I was considering deleting him. I'm sure glad I stuck it out now, since the end was some of the most fun I'd had in all his time. While you shouldn't play something that isn't fun, try to stick it out as long as possible. You never know, something interesting may come up!
