How often do people get unique items from monsters?
By my thinking, a unique item is retreived once from the monster. Once that happens, the item will be in circulation until someone sacrifices it, or it is destroyed. The chances that it gets sacrificed are pretty rare, right? People are more likely to take the item for their own use. If the item is restricted by alignment, people may find a reason to sacrifice it. I think the absolute best benefactor of good item circulation is the BATTLE cabal because they sacrifice all magical items.
Unfortunately, item circulation isn't always healthy. To encourage healthy item circulation I propose that the best items are hunted. A hunted item would have to be really good, because the item provokes random encounters with powerful monsters which try to retrieve the item. I don't think people should die, but I do think that these monsters should pose a serious threat to an unprepared hero. Upon pounding the victim into submission, the monster would paralyze the PC and then steal the item (to be returned to the mob who origionally had it). This system would work like the current Nightgaunt system works.
This system would inevitably kill people. While encounters would be rare, and random, some would come when people are already fighting or pkilling. For the most part (unless someone always pks), the heros would only find the encounter challenging. The hunting monster doesn't want to kill the person, only steal the item. The person would only die if they continually flee.
