Should the role be a work of art or is it just fine if you write it like:
-Harwulf was born in Galadon, was raised by his father and mother
-Hates all other races but duergars
-eats meat and drinks mostly ale
etc.

Generally speaking, the immortal reading your role is more interested in the content than the style. A neatly organized outline of relevant facts is preferable to a poorly written paragraph about irrelevant things. The key to writing an effective role is deciding what to include, and being consistent throughout. To use your example, if your character hates all other races but duergar, you should provide at least a brief rationale for that, especially since the character is question was raised among a mixture of races (Galadon).

Finally, don't think of a role as something you put in at level 1 (or whenever) and are forever bound to, as is. Characters should evolve and change in meaningful ways as they go through their life experiences, for reasons that make sense for that character. It's good practice to occasionally update things.
