#4370, "New player wondering what path to take."
|
Hello, I am new here. Before I jumped right into the game, I
was curious if I could get the opinions of some of the
experienced Carrion Field players.
Now, this is the deal. I usually from video games, to muds, to
table tops always play a warrior. It suits me, might be my
Viking Blood or whatnot. But I kinda want to experience
something different. This by no means takes the warrior of the
table though. I am currently totally indecisive. Part of me
wants to play either a Necromancer, a Transmuter, or a
Conjurer. Another part wants something more familiar like the
Warrior or maybe even the Orcish Berserker.
So I ask you guys, what would you recommend to someone new? Do
the magic classes I've selected have too steep a learning
curve for a new player to catch on? if I choose a warrior will
I become bored quickly? I can think up a story for any of
them, so RP isn't a problem. I'm just looking for a fun new
experience.

Assassin (arial, felar or human)
Shapeshifter (gnome, human or felar. Gnome is most powerful
and therefore recommended. Felar cannot take water and air
foci)
Warrior (e.g. arial sword, felar spear/hand, swirf axe, giant
polearm)
Bard
Orderly Good Conjurer (human, half, elf)
Ranger (stays in wilderness, forest is probably best pick for
home terrain)
Of the mage classes you selected, necromancer, transmuter and
neutral/evil conjurer are more difficult in my opinion.

Regardless of who or what criteria is asked, I always suggest
the following:
1. Assassin
2. Assassin
3. Assassin
Really, you could probably get by with ranger or warrior as
well (maybe shapeshifter if you HAD to go mage), but the sight
and balance of an assassin really helps to learn the game.

Assassin is the "optimal" choice as a new player to
learn the game.
It's also an awesome class to play and very fun to learn the
ropes with.
Well, besides kicks :-)

Assassin. Like a warrior with stealth and moves that are less
dependent on the gear you wear. Also you see more enemies
coming and can get out of nasty situations more easily.
Assassin is good for learning the ropes, then try other stuff
after?

Warriors have a lot of variety in CF owing to the different
weapon specializations and legacies. Orcs are somehow both
very straightforward and very versatile - lots of hp, very
good at healing up quickly, can hide in certain places, tons
of raw offensive power, some very powerful stuff from
adaptations.
I doubt you'd get bored with a warrior and if that's what
you're into you should play one. Very solid choice.

Understand this:
The "nofol self" command is important. There will be
thieves and assassins that will simply follow you around
otherwise. Once you level into the 30s standing around in
cities/guilds is a quick way to get PKed.
With my first char, a felar warrior, I had a hard time
understanding why I kept getting assassinated at every turn
until I figured this out. Assassins in your general area will
"stalk" you (after they are level 35+). Meaning if
you stand around too long they will likely kill you in a
single strike, for example once you step out of your guild to
go rank or whatever.
This can be avoided by moving quickly from place to place.
Making sure no one can follow you super easily (including
thieves that will lurk around waiting for a good chance to
trip/kill you). Assassins and thieves will have to step out of
hiding on water, so briefly going onto the river along the
eastern road or hanging on the oceans a bit can help mitigate
some of these issues or to help inform you if you're being
followed.
Warriors are strong in the early and mid ranks. Toward the
late 30s early 40s you may find you get your butt kicked.
Though once you are up against all the heroes this will be the
case for a while with pretty much any class (especially as a
newb), hence the benefits of being able to hide/camo/duo when
you are still learning the game. A big part of the learning
curve is knowing which matchups/situations are win-able and
which are a death trap. This takes a lot of practice and is
something you learn again with each new class you try.
Good luck. Expect to die a lot for quite some time but know
that eventually you will start kicking butt too if you stick
with it.
PS- I also think an assassin or arial-thug thief (battlerager
defender) would be a great build to learn/explore, but you may
find that getting a group to rank is much easiest with an
assassin/warrior/shifter/ranger, in which case think about
nexus or fort as cabals.

I will start off with: Welcome to CF!
Warrior is the most popular class in the game too so you are
not alone and most melee classes play similarly. So classes
like Rangers and Assassins are going to be more similar to a
warrior. Thieves are a little bit less of a straight up melee
class depending on how you play it.
To answer your question, I think any mage class you can learn
with. Shapeshifter is the closest to warrior. Each class
plays slightly differently too. The issue with mages is that
they do not have very much HP. Between magic and HP gear you
can fill the gap though it might take a while to get up the
in-game knowledge.
If I were you, I would either dive into a class that you want
to learn/RP and stick with it until the end (that is how you
learn the most). Or play a class you are more familiar with
but is slightly different like an Assassin and start learning
more about mages by helping them out with things. (I learned
to play with an assassin.)

Shapeshifters. They are mage classes with many spells that come in handy, Identify, Teleport, Detect invis, Invis, word of recall, etc. but in the higher ranks they play very similar to warrior builds with certain choices in shapefucus. In my opinion, they are a very good mage class to get your feet wet with.
No class you mentioned is boring but to keep interest it's really up to the player to find and keep the interaction and interest going. I wouldn't personally suggest a necromancer but a transmuter, conjurer, or orc wouldn't be awful choices. A transmuter is often sought in ranking groups, the same with a conjurer and orcs can play very similar to offensive builds of a warrior.
In the end, whatever you choose will only be as fun as the effort you put in. Good luck though.
