#3894, "New player here!"
|
Salutations, all! I come from another MUD and, due to irritation with the staff and pbase, have decided that CF will be my new home! Please.. please, tell me all you can. I'd forgotten just how lost a newbie can feel!

Thank you all for the feedback. I was a "vet" in my other mud so am quite familiar with the necessary paranoia that goes along side <where/where pk> as well as the benefits of learning the Geography. I've been extremely impressed with the amount of willing aid people have given, despite the fact that I'm still below PK level (I'm sure that will change). I've chosen a good aligned Human Warrior as my first, as in my other mud I always suggested people try to learn the PK aspect of the game with the raw class that relies on melee/armor/consumables as to force exploration. I had planned on speaking with some from Fortress (the good aligned Cabal as I understand), do you all feel as though this is a good strategy based upon your mechanics? I'm excited about roles and will -definitely- be using them! I will also keep the bias from angsty players away from my interpretation, the harsh environment is one I both expect and welcome.

And go Fortress.
Or Human Bard in Fortress. Both fulfill niches in the Fortress that are sometimes lacking (Fort is usually dwarf/elf/storm giant centric and paladin/warrior centric).

Sure, most would say assassin/ranger/bard/thief. But personally I'm a serial warrior player and I've learned a lot from playing one. Just as you say you are forced to explore to find consumables, armor etc.
You are forced to stay on your toes since you can't just hide. To learn the aspect of PK I think it's a good choice. You'll get to die a lot though, that's for certain. A lot more than say arial assassin would.
The fortress is always good to turn to, you'd get a lot of help from there. However, that place is also the most "newbie" filled place, so not everyone you ask will have the correct answers. hehe Always shoot first and then call whatever you hit the target.

It deals mainly with how to minmax your stats and what skills you should spam to 100%. The guide doesn't delve too deeply into elaborate tradeoffs, but rather focuses on basic minmaxing nearly everyone in CF does. The guide is found here in New Player Q&A forum.

1) I assume since you've played MUDs before, you are familiar with the concept of lag. Lag plays a vital part in all PvP encounters (either from lagging yourself with a command or getting lagged by another character's command). Ask a bunch of questions on the newbie chat about lag if you want to get a better handle on it.
2) It's called CarrionFields for a reason. You will die. You will die horribly. You will also probably get looted. These are inevitable things. Best to get used to them and learn how to deal with defeat and re-gearing (it's probably THE most important skill in CF).
3) Role command is your friend. Think up a cool story for your character, write it down. Now Immortals will understand what your character is all about and occasionally they will act on that. You had a relative who was a priest of Rayihn who molested you and that's why you hate all Rayihn priests? If it's in your role, odds are either Rayihn or someone like Enlilth will act on it.
4) Gear is important, but not the end-all-be-all. See the 2) above, and realize that while having good gear is important, being able to kill someone without it is WAY more important.
5) Decide if you want to focus on PK or RP. Of course, the goal is to do both, but as someone starting off you should focus on one of the two if you can. I focused on RP with my first character then worked on my PK with several successive characters (for example).
6) As a newbie, pick a survival-able class as your first character. Assassin/Ranger/Bard are great choices for this. Plus, if you roll up a bard, people will want to group with you (because bards are a great member of a group). Grouping with people is important as a newbie because A) you'll learn areas just watching other people lead the group and learn where to rank/gather gear/etc. Also, grouping will give you allies that potentially will help you survive/kill people.
7) Type where a lot Like, A LOT. It's crucial to know when and where you might get attacked.
7A) If you do not start a fight, don't continue it. Always strive to control the when/why/where of a battle if you can. Eventually, you'll be able to stay in fights you didn't start, but for now concentrate on only fighting battles you control/start.
8) Accept the fact that your first character is going to be a learning experience and try to con-die him. I con-died my first character and I can't tell you how important that was to my evolution as a CF player.
9) Ask questions.
Good luck.

Hey there, I would highly suggest going to www.qhcf.net and looking at the Diku wiki information. I found it extremely useful, and still use it to this day. Good luck in the fields!

But it's also not imm run, it's player run, and it's also the place to bitch about things. So take the negative posts on it with a grain of salt, they really do represent a small chunk of the playerbase. If you're from another mud, I'm sure you know exactly which "chunk" I'm talking about. I would actually almost suggest that if you find yourself frustrated with negative aspects of a playerbase, that you just not read the posts and use it for an information source. Again, keep in mind it isn't imm run so the information there is not guaranteed to be correct, but it is very helpful at times.
