#2075, "Hunters, Rangers in General"
|
Heya,
I'm a new player here, and I recently started my first character which is a hunter ranger. I've been getting on top of exploring and finding items (most players are very helpful in game, thanks in advance), but I am finding it a bit hard with PK.
I used to play a quite similar MUD which has many similarities and many differences in the PK department.
I've been warned not to fight outside of the wild, but I can never seem to find my enemies in the wild areas that I know.
Any small hunter tips would be appreciated.

Being neutral can be hard to RP, and if not caballed (which I'd advise against for a first char here) can be really really hard.
But, as a ranger, you have many angles. Maybe you don't like people killing beasts in your woods, you don't like perversions of nature like APs, necromancers, etc. (similar to outlander, but at this stage in your character, tough to just give up using gold and say hey sign me up hippies!). Maybe you don't like thieves and civlized types like tribunal, empire. etc. Imperials will generally expect rangers to be their enemy.
Dervish listed some good places to find people - generally at this rank they will be either raiding, defending, or ranking in some common wild and civilized areas. mages are always out looking for their sleek wands, but forget that for now. Ask some goodies in game where those evils tend to rank.
And you don't *have* to be in the wild. Hunters are good enough fighters that catching someone off guard by rushing in can work. Especially if you chase them to a snare (do hunters get snare?). Your skills do get better the more time you are in the wild, but by this rank you aren't going to hurt yourself too much by exploring civilized areas. Also, you know, if an area isn't wild, generally there is a wild path leading to it you can hide in and get them when they leave to repop.

If you make friends with everyone you're going to have a hard time finding enemies.
People aren't going to sit out in the wilds waiting for you to come and find them. They're only going to be there if they have numbers and are ranking or gear gathering. Luckily, many of the high level ranking areas are wild.
Ganging in carrionfields is acceptable, people are going to gang you. I'm not saying hop on the band wagon, but some people you're not going to be able to kill solo.
You can find outside the wilds. Sometimes it is necessary. I'm playing a hunter ranger and I fight outside the wilds often. Just don't be crazy about it. What I do is find a place in the wilds that can observe the civilized area that they are in and get about 5 observes on them and then go in. They'll have a hard time hitting you. You might not be able to keep them there though, so make sure it's lightning out and when they flee if they are low enough health, hit them with a lightning bolt for the win.
You have a few tactics at your disposal, you're going to have to experiment. Low dex mages I like to use the bow and forgo the ambush. Aimed shot head to start with, hopefully you'll daze them and then try to lag with aimed torso. That's not the only option though because with your staff/spear you can possibly get 5 hits of MUTILATES/EVISCERATES a round with third attack and serpentstrike. You're just going to have to experiment, but it's going to be hard to find opponents when you're buddy buddy with a lot of people. You may have to wait until a new crop of midbies gets into your range that you don't know. Find a reason to hate people and put that into your role.

Never played hunters past 13 but saw some.
Where to find people: 1. Catch them whilst they are learning. For you its Kiadana Rah, its ruins of the deep, maybe Underdark
2. Catch them when they are moving on common paths. Thats near Fortress and near Tree. Two cabals HQs, yes. Add Weald here and you have something to have a look in.
How and whom to fight with hunters. As I know they are good in exploring and making people to flee, but can not lag reliably or dish big damage as invokers.
Join Outlanders. They are on power now, so it wont be too hard for you, but you will have some good battles in raiding wars.
Try immolation and lagging arrows. Try to make allies and gank (like me,hehe). Two people can lag and damage better than one.
Find another things to do - explore, RP, trade.

My main problem isn't that I'm losing all my fights, it's mainly that I can't find anyone who's an enemy of mine.
Most people I see out in the wild are people who've helped me, or people I don't know. My character isn't bloodthirsty, so I don't attack just anyone.
Maybe I just don't know the place well enough to find where people go, but I've been told to never fight outside the wild.
I'm starting to think that hunter wasn't a great choice for a beginner, as it's tough to stick people in combat.
Also, in the MUD I used to play, ganging is considered to be very bad form unless in certain cabal situations, so I never do it. I find it more fun and challenging to fight people one on one.
