#1735, "edges and ooc"
|
I'm just curious about something. It has always been my belief that "edges" as such, would be something inhernetly OOC in nature. Not that they can't be discussed in an IC way, (i.e. Burt has learned to make his bonshatter cause internal bleeding, etc...), but saying something like, "Hey, I can learn edges now!" or "Burt has the boneshatter edge," would be OOC comments. Yet several times now I've heard just this sort of comment multiple times now over the cabal channel. So if I'm wrong in this matter, please let me know.
I post this on this board just in case I'm right in my views on this, in which case, I think newer folk need to know as well.
Thanks.

I pretty much agree with that.
IC, an edge is a piece of special training you picked up or a special advantage you gained in some way. Sometimes, the edge echoes hint at how this happens; otherwise, it's up to you to decide the IC explanation for your character's edge.
But at no time would 'this guy has the boneshatter edge' be IC speech.

Unfortunately, I've heard EXACTLY that phrase over the cabal channel. Now, I've been gone from this game for a long time, so my memory of some things is a big foggy. What should a person do if they witness such things? In the case with boneshatter, a person could point it out discreetly in an IC fashion with a comment like, "What are you talking about lad? Maces don't have edges. Learn your weapons." Or something like that. However, not all scenarios will be so easy to point out in an IC fashion. In those less simple scenarios, what should a person do?
