#1553, "Help understanding death result"

Hi,
I'm delighted by how death is handled on this MUD. I find I have a question on a specific detail. Here's what the help doc says:

"When you die, your experience will reset to the amount needed for the current level plus (100 multiplied by your level)."

Should that word "plus" actually be "minus"?

When I died, my "ntl" percentage (not the counter but the percentage in parentheses) was negative. I took that to mean my experience points had dropped slightly below what I needed for the level I currently was. Which is how I would read the help text above, if it said "minus" instead of "plus" - do you see what I'm asking?

I continue to be delighted. I just want to understand this game dynamic.

Oh - another great thing about death. I was just reading in the help docs that dying via PK doesn't reduce your experience points at all! I love you guys.

Peace,
Lund

It really comes down to how you read it. The way it's supposed to be read is that your experience you need for the current level will be reset to (base needed for current level plus 100*lvl), so the addition is to what's needed, not the experience you have.

The experience you need to gain a new level is calculated following way:

GAINING EXPERIENCE

As you gain experience, you will rise in stature within your guild. The amount of experience needed to gain a level is calculated this way:
1) Determine the Base XP for a level 1 character of your race and class. This is equal to 1500 + class penalty + race penalty. Call this Base XP.
2) Determine 20% of that amount. Call this the Level Adjustment.
3) The amount you will need to get to next level is: ((Current Level - 1) * Level Adjustment) + Base XP

Example 1:
A Human Warrior will have a Base XP of 1500 (1500 + 0 + 0), and a Level Adjustment of (1500 * 0.2) = 300xp.

To move from level 2 to level 3, the human warrior would need to earn ((2-1) * 300) + 1500 = 1800 xp.

To move from level 31 to level 32, The human warrior would need to earn ((31 - 1) * 300) + 1500 = 10,500 xp.

Example 2:
A Storm Giant Paladin will have a base XP of 2400 (1500 + 500xp racial
penalty + 400xp class penalty) and a level adjustment (2400 * 0.2) = 480 xp.

To move from level 6 to level 7, the storm paladin will need to earn
((6-1) * 480) + 2400) = 4800 xp.

What the plus there(bolded in the following formula) means is that your new tnl will be:

tnl after mobdeath = ((Current Level - 1) * Level Adjustment) + Base XP + 100*(Current Level)

It is found from

http://www.carrionfields.com/Help/

For example in doc format:

http://www.carrionfields.com/Help/CFGameGuide.doc

That particular snippet on how tnl and experience penalties work is copypasted from that newbie guide. I think the formula used to be in helpfiles too, but I haven't seen it there recently.

By the looks of it. I've noticed that helpfiles for even simplest basic commands are usually worth reading. This snippet caught my eye when browsing the newbie guide:

Keeping your description to 80 characters per line (including spaces) is the first step toward making sure other people can read your description without undue effort.

The best way of doing this is to use the wrap chop function in Dioxide's unofficial CF page, which gives the output in convenient paste to game-format with the note+ role+ desc+ added in front of the lines. The page url is www.qhcf.net .
Dio's also has forums(logs in particular tend to be posted mainly in Dio's, where they have their own board) and some other CF-related stuff you may or may not find useful.

Anyway, I'm rambling. Welcome to CF and all that.
